CETME chambered in 7.62X51 NATO.  Fun Semiautomatic rifle.  Fairly accurate.  Very cheap HK surplus magazines, ~$4.00 per 20 rounder.  If you know what to check before you buy, they're good rifles.

My DPMS Sweet 16 chambered in .223 Rem.  It's called a Sweet 16 because the barrel is 16" long.  I've had optics on it, but it's usually more fun with the detachable sights.  If I ever do get serious about shooting with this one, I'll probably stick a Magpul PRS buttstock on it.  Fun as hell to shoot.

Swiss K31 chambered in 7.5 Swiss service cartridge.  Probably my favorite surplus rifle.  This was the standard service rifle of the Swiss military for 25 years.  It uses a unique straight pull mechanism for very fast bolt operation.  The fit an finish of these rifles is unsurpassed.  Russian Mosin Nagants feel like primitive war clubs compared to these.  They're superbly accurate with standard, match-grade surplus GP-11 ammuntion.  1" groups at 100 yards are easily accomplished with open sights.

My Sig Sauer P220 chambered in .45acp.  It's built like a tank, shoots where you aim it and is dead reliable.  The only thing I dislike is the relatively high bore axis.  It tends to have a little more muzzle flip than I like in .45s but the Hogue grip really helps keep it under control.  It's got one of my favorite triggers, breaks like glass.

A friend had a 9mm, muzzle flip was far worse than my Hi Power.

I'd take a Sig over a Browning or CZ any day.

Reliability, looks, and I just like the way a Sig feel and points.  You?

*edit
I feel more strongly about Sig vs. Browing here than Sig vs. CZ.  CZ makes a hell of a pistol too.

I only really like the old browning shotguns.  Newer ones seem to kick like hell compared to Remmies.

Anyone here got an AKM (or very similar style furniture) who can also do me a favour by providing me with the dimensions of the upper and lower handguard's (W, H, L), plus the length of the barrel fore of the guards and the top cover please. Will much appreciate it.

Never had a problem with a Browing, never heard of a problem with a CZ.

Sigs are big, clunky, the barrel line is very high so the muzzle-flip is excessive.
Trigger is not as good as people like to think, and I much prefer the way the smaller, lighter pistols point and shoot - they're quicker and easier to shoot accurately, once you know what you're doing.

I wouldn't buy a DA/SA pistol in any event so its a bit moot.

Nothing wrong with Sig pistols.  I've only ever noticed some flip with P220s chambered in .45acp and P226/9s chambered in .40s&w.  The 9x19mm is such a little pussy of a round I've never noticed much flip from any handgun.

But comparing 9mms side by side the Sig flips much more which makes it slower to shoot.

Question, Yanks: If I were to move to the US, what would stop me buying a gun? I don't need citizenship or anything do I, I just have to go through the same checks as anyone else?

2nd Amendment applies to citizens of the United States of 'Merica. But who would let you have a gun anyway?

Some states allow you to own a firearm if you been a resident long enough. Having military experience (allied nations aka NATO/ISAF) will help your speed up your process.

You see a lot of these here. Nearly every family has one somewhere gathering dust. And since you can buy them as military surplus, they're dirt cheap too.

Hmm ... your post kinda makes me want to have one. I think I'll see if I can find a nice one

if you get drafted into the army, you do basic training and once in a while you do refresh courses for a couple days. Also you have to do shooting tests. While you're not in a refresh course, you take your rifle home and do whatever. After you're done with the military (depends on your rank how long. Officers have to serve ages) you can buy your rifle for a small fee or return it to the military.
