he needs a psu, doesnt need mouse/kb/etc, already has 7

the 800 is just for psu, mobo, cpu, ram, hd, gpu, and case

no chance? are you joking? it doesnt have to be some top of the line shit; just needs a halfway decent cpu and gpu, no?

Ignore Cammy, he doesn't know what he's talking about really.

Gimme a sec. I'm assuming US Dolla and Newegg?

He won't need a powerful GPU.

You could get a suitable system for that budget with no problem.

Big fast hard drives - very big and more than one.
Fast CPU - not a stripped down CPU that works well for gaming, a proper one, like an i5 (i7 would be ideal, but not really feasible on that budget).
Good chunk of quick RAM.

That's all you need to worry about.

Big fans might be a good idea too - some decent CPU overclocks might slash render times.

Erm, a tad over budget, with no GPU (Use onboard) and only 4GB RAM/500GB HDD but it's excellent for upgrading. Another 2GB RAM and as many hard-drives as you want, and a GPU can be added if he really needs it.

Have you spec'd him a machine with 2 CPUs and only one CPU slot?

yeah that should be good with a gpu instead of 2 cpus

you add as many hard drives as you want with that psu ?

I wondered why it was so expensive.

jsnipy, don't be pulled into the "need moar wattz", so long as the PSU is branded and 80+ certified you can get away with a lot more than you think.

ig, stick a 5770 in there then.

CPU cooler for overclocking goodness, or if he's not interested in that switch it out for a budget GPU.

He can have loads on that CPU.

I run 5 hard drives and a GTX 260 (and about a zillion other things) on a 520W Corsair PSU with no problems at all.

Don't go overboard on GPU - it really won't need any sort of serious GPU processing power - unless you can work out some fancy CUDA stuff. I'd set a $100 limit on GPU unless you can really justify it.

What you want is a 1TB hard drive to go in there as well. Add that and a cheap GPU and you'll be sorted.

I'd expect it'd be very, very tight.

Each will have areas where it performs better. The AMD CPU might well come out on top for these sorts of applications.

(but it's worse value for money)

You'd be better off looking at benchmarks comparing the things he wants to do.

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/146?vs=109

Pretty similar. As I expected the AMD chip is on top overall, but behind in some areas. It's better, but it's not close to being 50% better, which is what the extra cost of it is.

Finray's build is surprisingly alright, except for the fact that there's no DVD drive, no aftermarket cooler and he's also gone over budget
