I have a friends laptop i've been given to try to fix that I am stumped on.
It turns on fine, with a lot of whirring then beeps very loudly several times before going silent with the occasional whir or click from inside.
It's made by hi-grade, cant tell you much further than that. Mobo's foxconn and i stuck 1gb of ram in there about a year ago.
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

I would try to boot a ubuntu live cd.  If it can run off of that with no problem then its probably the hard drive.
