Any good video conversion tools out there?

So I want to convert some episodes of my favorite tv show to widescreen. How do I do it? Divx is great but I've only got 15 days plus it's 23 pound. Virtual dub makes the files 50gb per episode. Windows movie maker takes far to long.

Any ideas?
