Is this worth getting, rather than building an entire HTPC? Has anyone here used one before?

Convenience versus full HTPC capabilities.  My Roku HD-XR to be delivered this Tuesday.  I don't trust my kids/wife to use the media PC.

I guess this would be related:

Anyone know of some options for DVR/Set-top box type devices that either support, or have been hacked to support Linux+XBMC?

Built in hard drive isn't mandatory as I'll mostly be playing stuff of of my network server/main computer. But since it's Linux it shouldn't be too hard to add a USB drive. Built in WiFi a major plus.

The regular Xbox version got discontinued recently because it doesn't have the proc power to keep up with the new updates.

Yep, I have 3.  They're great, I'd highly recommend it.  They get used pretty much every day.  The newer models support pretty much every file type and codec and the GUI is simple and easy to use (not flashy or fancy or anything).

TheDonkey, you might be looking more towards a Popcorn Hour C-200 type of thing.  I've heard nothing but good things about them as well.

Which version do you have? One with network capabilities or just the regular one?

I've got the regular one and love it. I use it every night.
btw, the Live Plus has Netflix streaming

I was going to upgrade to it but I use my PS3 for Netflix and streaming anything else I might want to so I don't really need it at the moment.
Only thing I really use my HTPC for is Hulu, which is rare.
But yea... WDTV is awesome.

Guess I don't really need the live then. No Netflix or Hulu in Canada. Thanks for the input.

No problem.
Just to clarify, the Live version does offer streaming files from your PC if it's on your network.
But yea, the original non-Live version serves me just fine.

Ah, it looks like an Apple TV, except good and about a 3rd of the price.

Get the Live version.  Its about $10 more and supports DTS (which is key).  I have the original and I have to transcode audio to AC3 to watch it which really blows.  Maybe they fixed this in a newer edition but afaik the base model still doesn't.

The WD site says all of them except the mini support DTS.

If you bought DRMed files, you deserve to be fucked over tbh.

Can't you just burn to CD (CD-RW tba) to remove the Apple DRM's?

Karma. If you support DRM, karma says that you'll have to suffer.

Yes, but it's a bitch to have to do.

I'm pretty sure there exist tools that directly remove the DRM.

Ah, I see they made a 2nd generation WD TV HD one.  Though the 2nd gen apparently has audio sync issues, so you're still better off with the Live version.

And yes, if you bought movies from the iTunes store with DRM you do deserve all the problems you're getting.

I've never bought anything off of iTunes so I'm good to go.
