awhile back and I have to take a bit of offenses with it.

The documentary was chronicling the child sex tourism industry which is pretty prevalent through some Asian countries. The documentary highlighted one part where a few American volunteer heroes helped Filipino police bust a house where they were pimping out 9 and 10 year old children. Once the pimps were captured and all of the children rounded up, the kids started crying. They were sad to be taken away from their pimps who were selling them to Americans and Euro adult men for sex.

The reason the children started crying: the Philippines isn't a very well developed country and sleeping with men for money was a guaranteed meal as well as preferable to total poverty.

So the little girls were put into state orphanages which lets be honest are total hellholes even in the U.S. The girls will more then likely end up getting sexually abused and have to live in standards worse then when they were kept as sex objects.

Now I hate to be defending child prostitution but what the hell are the volunteers thinking when they go over seas and do stuff like this? The idea of having sex with a child repulses me but at least while prostituting the child enjoyed a better standard of living then they would have otherwise had. Stupid ass volunteers should focus on improving the conditions of the country to make sure that the children won't have to becomes prostitutes rather than disrupt the kids lives and make their conditions worse.

Does anyone else agree with me that cracking down on child brothels should be a peripheral goal and focus should be set to improving the economic/social conditions of countries like the Philippines?

Lower child labour laws then you'll have lower child prostitution.

Of course they should.

Charity as a whole is thinking with your heart and not your brain, because if you were thinking with your brain what you would be doing wouldn't be called charity. People will pin every evil in the world on big bad faceless corporations, and not bat an eye when they turn around and start agreeing with phrases like give a man a fish/teach a man to fish.

Many countries have extra-territorial laws, go to a kiddy brothel in the Philippines -> You get prosecuted as a paedophile in Australia, UK, wherever you're resident.

I look at it more like this...  Perspective is everything.

Sweatshops are an improvement upon the average everyday life of many people living in developing countries.  So to them, it's a good thing.  Of course, there are several abuses that often go on -- many of which we view as human/labor rights issues.

Of course, caring about rights is a luxury we have since most of us aren't desperately trying to make ends meet for food and shelter.

Granted, these differences in perspective truly show us what humans are like when the facade of morality is stripped away.  Like the Joker said, "When the chips are down, they'll eat each other."  This also applies to a group that has plenty of capital, sees an opportunity, and doesn't really have any oversight.  Corporations more or less have free reign in the developing world, so the way they behave in these places gives us an insight into how they'd act here if they weren't legally restricted by things like labor laws.  Hell, they even get away with some crazy shit here even with those in place.

So, on the one hand, the exploits of industry in the developing world do help the people involved because they often have little to lose and everything to gain.  But, on the other hand, they're just cogs in a very big wheel -- easy to control and even easier to replace.  Whenever labor is expendable, the behavior of its managers manifests accordingly.

In the end, it's not about morals or ethics.  It's about people using each other as instruments.  The kids born into sex slave trades are pretty much fucked (no pun intended) regardless of whether they're rescued or not.  Why?  Because if they don't die from some terrible VD or violence, they'll likely die in the street or in some factory.

S'okay.. I went ahead and booked him a room at one of those sex-tourism brothels that are recently short on employees.

I figure he can work there, earn a decent living, and have days off to effect some nation-building, societal change, and win some 'hearts and minds'

Well, the fat and unemployed thing is a temporary problem.  Americans probably won't be very decadent much longer.  The same is true for a lot of the rest of the developed world.

what makes you think that? why the fuck would you stop that shit when it's been working so well for so long? there are still markets and resources out there to be included in your grand scheme called "global economy" so that you should be able to continue printing bucks faster than the inflation devalues them like you've been doing for, like, forever?

Capitalism clears the market in various ways.  When a country succumbs to comparative advantage without making the necessary changes in infrastructures like education systems to accommodate changes in labor needs, then that country's debts accumulate and eventually come crashing down.

We've been shifting away from manufacturing and toward services for a long time, and that requires many changes to education that haven't come to fruition.  Our labor force is not anywhere near as skilled as it needs to be to continue adapting to changes brought about by outsourcing.  We've attempted to sidestep this issue through importing skilled labor from other countries, but that doesn't resolve issues with our "native" underclass.  When you combine this problem with illegal immigration, it translates to having a rapidly growing lower class amidst an infrastructure incapable of handling the associated burdens that come with poverty.  In the end, this means the average person will experience a lower standard of living.

Perhaps, although I would assume that's it's not really a race thing.  I think the future will be one where most developed countries will simply have a more blatant aristocracy than before, while the majority of the populace (regardless of race) will be considerably poor by comparison.

This whole concept of social/economic mobility for the masses is one that I believe will evaporate in the near future.

Imo in America you have no fucking excuse to become homeless. It is all by choice and lack of personal responsibility and will.
