I think the Nationals Stadium was funded at least in part by taxpayer money. Their goal was not only to provide a stadium for the Nationals, but also to revitalize the neighborhood.

Both goals have been accomplished. The Navy Yard and Waterfront neighborhoods where the stadium is used to be pretty run down. Now they have apartments like this:

ya same thing happened in Cleveland....now the team stinks and those places are a ghost town.  looked just like what you are describing.  it dont last.  but the millions and millions the players and owners get leave town.
ffffuuuuuuu

I think it'll last here though... Cleveland has its problems, if I'm not mistaken a dying economy. DC's economy is doing pretty well especially given the current world economy, and with all the government spending there's practically no shortage of Federal jobs. A lot of people are also moving in to DC, and apartments like those are far more affordable on a early career salary than the apartments in fancier neighborhoods.

Although around here it's like saying a Porsche is more affordable than a Lamborghini. Maybe, but it's still fuckin expensive.

True... hopefully they'll fight tooth and nail to keep the team there. I sure would after spending all that damn money!

The Isles are going through major drama with getting a new arena/getting the Coliseum renovated.

Today our owner pretty much put the Town of Hempstead's exec into the corner by saying he'd make a deal with the Shinnecocks and have a Mohegan Sun-esque casino put in, which she'd have no jurisdiction/control over.

So he'd move the team out to the Hamptons just to spite Hempstead? That's pretty funny, especially since the east end is a ghost town during hockey season and they're all Rangers fans anyway.

But, what do you expect from people with lifelong patronage jobs like most of the Townships are staffed with? They want their bribes and they'll hold up any contract work until they get them. Suozzi needs to dissolve all of them. Just unnecessary bureaucracy leeching off taxpayers for no purpose whatsoever.

The New York Islanders are based on Long Island in the Town of Hempstead. They've been trying to have their plans for a new arena approved for almost a decade now but the Town board keeps holding them up and requesting revisions etc.

The Shinecock Indians are a tribe on the east end of Long Island that have become wealthy by hosting one of the top golf courses in the world on their land.

Really a stadium is just a means to an end.

- Makes the local population funnel money to construction companies, usually reasonably local

- Helps corporation dole out some of their cash in the form of sponsorship

- Gets people away from the TVs and spending a bit of cash locally instead of handing it to the cable companies and Dominos.

Its an economic tool, same as a new military contract or hospital - except a stadium is entirely useless.

That AFL and cricket get $450m spent on them is tiresome, the hiking trails get nothing, the single mountain bike park and velodrome bugger all.

Point is many more than that actually DO aerobics training, as opposed to sitting down, drinking beer and eating pies - which is what spectator sports consist of.
