They have smaller, dimmer and less helpful focusing screens. Thats why fine manual focus is impossible on most DSLRs compared to old film cameras. I would know, the first 4 months I had my 20D all I had was old MF lenses, its especially bad at 1.8
My uncle just gave me his old DSLR, Nikon D40. Currently only have the stock 18-55mm lens. Sure as hell beats my point and shoot!

18-55 is for the most part not a bad lens (or so Ive found, pretty sure the Nikon variant is of similar quality). You will want to take it off auto, keep the ISO lower so it isnt grainy, also look up the rule of thirds. And most importantly have fun yo

I did a photo op at my nearby pond. Below are reflection in water shots, scenery shots, doorway/entranceway shots, riverbend shots, and bridge shots. I just love taking pictures of nature. None of the below have been edited.
