Tried reinstalling Chrome? Maybe it's swapped your EXE with an afflicted one.

Yeah it's always the same pop-up, on lots of different and unrelated sites. I get it on talkbass.com (bass guitar discussion forum), geekstogo (tech help forum for computers) translink (the Brisbane public transport website) gumtree.com (classifieds), gamemonitor.com... list goes on.steelie34 wrote:

well that definitely is a spyware infection then.. it's a dodgy one too from the looks of it. tried firefox yet? only thing is that adblock plus isn't removing the spyware, just preventing the pop-up. i think reformatting is probably your only option to really remove it, unless some new anti-spyware definitions will catch it soon. i'd say give it a week or so, and don't do any online banking or anything in the mean time, just to be safe. thats some pretty evasive stuff you got there.
Yeah it's weird. Pissing me off and there's not a lot I can do about it. I've already done a fair bit of online banking, so when I get to work in about an hour I'll change the password to my login. Thanks for trying to help me.

Last night I hooked up my old computer, went online and immediately on the same sites had the same pop-up. That computer has never had this issue before.
Just now I asked one of my housemates if she has had this issue on her laptop, she said yes.
Could there in fact be something wrong with the router?

my first guess is that somehow a proxy server has been setup on your router that is delivering ad content to you while you are surfing.

It's probably easiest to reset and reconfig the router.

I always seem to do something wrong when reconfiguring a router. Any idea what settings I should use? Or perhaps it's best I call the manufacturer and get the settings from them?
The router is an Edimax, not quite sure on the specific model but it is an ADSL Modem Router.

you'll definitely want to set up some sort of authentication to the router after the reset. it will hopefully prevent this kind of stuff from happening in the future. if you search google for your model router, you'll probably find the user's guide that can help you set that up.
Well we had already setup a username and password (containing both letters and numbers) but a reset is on the cards... when it's not 5am here... thanks again
So we reset the router tonight... problem has disappeared.
As it turned out 4 PCs and 2 laptops all had the same issue (all connected to the same router either via ethernet cable or wireless).

wow... i always knew it would be possible for someone to do that to a router, but i never actually heard of it happening. would any of your friends do it just to mess with you? i can't believe someone could pull that off over the internet without knowing your model of router and how to get in. i also doubt it was compromised directly from the router, but probably using one of the pc's that was compromised. make sure you run adware scans on all of them just to be sure.
Some of us had been scanning for anything and everything, with no returned infections.
Noone was messing with us as a prank in the house, in fact when I'd ask if they'd been having these ads pop-up they'd be surprised I asked and tell me "yes".
Anyways, simply resetting the router seemed to do the trick, thanks
