Right, I've been waiting and waiting with this laptop purchase for quite some time now, always waiting for 'the next thing' to be released, and recently been waiting for i5/i7.

So now that's here and I really don't have time to wait for yet another generation of tech to come through. Laptop will be used for your regular day to day stuff - internet, office, etc - as well as the occasional Football Manager / Counter Strike game. Unsure if it will have to replace my desktop, but might as well treat it that way.

Why make a thread for advice on buying such a simple laptop? Well, my current laptop is slow as shit even for internet and microsoft office, booting takes fucking ages and it's just extremely sluggish. I absolutely hate it, more than anything else I've ever had PC-wise.

So I want something fast - preferably as fast as a regular desktop PC. I don't want to notice I'm using a laptop, if you get what I mean. Don't know if that's possible, but yeah. 15" seems to be the ideal size imo. Would also be nice if it had an HDMI port. Battery life is a relatively big thing, for me as most others when buying a laptop. Currently looking at the Dell Studios - sexy and powerful, it seems. Here's a quick rundown of the specs for comparison - is there anything here that is bad, or anything that's unnecesary?

  • Intel® Core™ i7-720QM Mobile Processor (1.6GHz, turbo up to 2.8GHz, 6MB L3 Cache)
  • 1 GB ATI Mobility Radeon™ HD5470
  • 4096 MB 1333 MHz duel channel DDR3 SDRAM [2 x 2024]
  • 250 GB (7200 rpm) SATA-harddisk
  • DVD +/- RW Drive (read/write CD & DVD) with DVD Burn software
  • 15.6" WLED-SCREEN WITH HD (1366 x 768)
  • 9-cell Lithium batery (85Wh)

Now, what throws me a bit off is the lack of a blu-ray drive, but I'm really not sure I need that. Also the HDD is a bit small, but I'm going to need externals anyway, so it doesn't make much difference.

So, any better options? To be perfectly honest, it's gonna take some convinsing to make me buy a ThinkPad due to it looking shit.

i have the Dell Studio XPS 16 and got it for $700+ off a nice sale.  the updated model is even nicer, but you'll be running a i5.  500GB HDD though.  battery life is my only complaint, it gets maybe 3.5 hours of regular use.

1366 x 768 is horribly low res. Try to get something with at least 1680x1050.

Take your pick. These guys beat Dell, HP or Sony (heh) any day for customer service. Don't want to be left high and dry with a broken down Acer/Asus, either.

Unless you're like me, and find an unbelievable sale on one...

HP Probook 6545b/6550b. I'm not sure if they live up to your aesthetics standards, but they're great laptops otherwise, and above all, they have proper, magnesium-reinforced chassis', so they're quite a bit sturdier than most other stuff I've seen in the price range.
The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP

You are saying day-to-day desktop replacement with a little bit of gaming...

I'd go for the VAIO E series.. I have one and I fucking love it... i5 430 - 4GB DDR3 - 500GB HDD - ATi 5850 1GB
runs everything... BC2 @ medium I believe and all source games at max... etc...

And a very reasonable price...

(I believe the E-series in america is quite different (quite crap actually), it was last time I checked the sony US website)
But then you are in norway nvm

Indeed... going above 1366x768 on 15" is often very expensive, and tbh I wouldn't want any higher considering you will want to be able to read on it....

and 17" laptops make me laugh

Once you've gone 1680x1050 on 15'', there's no going back. If text is too small read, you need glasses. Everything smaller will feel huge, cheap and shit. Sorta how linux or mac users fell about the regular windows folk

Already got glasses... lol...

I don't want to squint if I am sitting back in my chair to read text that is as small as this... And I don't want to stick my nose in my monitor to read image discriptions on various news-sites...

1366x768 is plenty for 15"ers... don't want any less but I might be able to accept a max of 1680x1050.. but that is what my 20" T200 is running... and that is already shrinked seeing as the most common size for 1680x1050 is a 22"

I can read the sub text just fine, up to about 2m away from the lappy. Not that I ever sit that far away from it. Maybe I just have godly eyesight *shrug*
