A short read on the first Starcraft's popularity in Korea.

Basically it says that originally, SC was released at a time when Korea's internet was just getting started, so the up and coming internet cafes offered SC as a game to play on their PC's, hence having one universal game that everyone began to play at roughly the same time.  It also mentions that Koreans like activities that test intelligence, and SC happens to fall under that umbrella for them.

yeah... starcraft 2 is really taking off in europe/america now, though... i guess after the success of warcraft/world of warcraft. big faith and fan-base for all blizzard products. esports pros and gamers are really hyping sc2 as the 'next big thing' and the next title to be worthy of serious time-investment and competitive play. always good, fresh and exciting to see that sort of growth.

this online stream has actually been really well-done. im surprised - gaming stuff is normally so slapdash and amateurish.

ebug it's not out yet... they're hosting a massive live-stream all day until it is officially released, worldwide. that's what i meant when i said there are huge countdown screens in seoul, korea. it's hugely anticipated and it's something like the iphone 4 launch in scale.

Well I guess if you look those who seem to be keen for this game (professional players, real gamers etc), then the people who present the game would be the same way, as in more concerned about the actual game itself and not the money behind it.

Compare that to MW2 and the people it's aiming at (frat boys, pre-pubescent squealers, "casual" gamers), and the people presenting it are likely to be those primarily chasing the dollar with little regard to quality of presentation.

and to think they're both made by the same company.

I was talking more about the online stream aspect.

Plus, CoD is made by infinity ward and published by activision, Starcraft is made and published by blizzard, which although is merged with activsion, isn't the same studio.

you know it's blasphemy to associate blizzard design with call of duty based design!

blizz have a perfect game-design studio.
