Meh 2x7200rpm 1TB drives should be better than 1x5400 2TB drive...

And the price is the same...
the seagates? meh, its just picture storage, doesn't need to be that fast, it saves space and power cords in the computer as well. So it allows for more future expansion if she is gonna be taking that many photos.
Are you people kidding?

I know she will just be dumping shit on it, but ffs come on.. if someone offered you two lotus elises or one lada niva... Only idiots would choose the latter...

1HDD = saves space, @5400RPM it saves power, uses one less SATA port which she'll probably use for a new HDD in the future.

I'm done arguing. I think we've fucked this thread up enough as it is.

well bad example..... that's more like comparing a old ass 4gb hdd to a sdd. there isn't that much difference between the seagates and the wd greens, you save power and space and a little money.

and what ebug said.

The Samsungs I was referring to are at least 25% faster at read/write tasks than normal WD disks...

and for the same price.. my example wasn't bad at all because if HDDs and SSDs were the same price that would be an equally obvious choice...

I dunno what you ppl are arguing about, but lets think about SSD + HDD combo now.

SSD for OS and main programs, maybe couple games. Then is the real question, do all the games and such fit on the SSD? If no, you'd like to have a 7200rpm HDD to put them on.

If your games fit on the SSD along with the other stuff, and use HDD only as data storage, the 5400rpm HDD(s) will be just fine.

Oh and the cost differences are insignificant, highend PC...

And HDD's power efficiency, even less significant in the big picture of i7 rig...

I was cutting out the SSD because, with her budget, to get one of acceptable size, unless she is deleting the games on the regular, would mean taking out other, more important components. I would much rather invest in a good 5.1 headset and sound card for gaming than an SSD.

IMO a 5400 might be acceptable if you rarely access it for anything, other then that, its dreadful.

But then again, if she is going to spend most time with other than gaming, SSD would result in very positive results for everyday use.

Back to square one.

This is true, I guess i could ditch the 1tb 7200 drive, and add this instead, it ups the price by $150, but would work. I dont really know whats good in SSDs at the moment though.

I'll look into how much switching to AMD Phenom II X6 1055T would save for other things like the SSD and proper sound card compared to the i7 build.

May be worth the change if i7 also means no SSD and other compromises.

For 1400-1500 dollars, i7 with all the goodies is doable, but if the budget is cut to <1300 dollars.... there will be some cut-downs.

This is why I kept it about 1250, she will be buying win7 as well, so thats $100, so the max build cost is $1400.

i7, 6GB RAM, SSD for OS/PS, 1TB 6GB/s drive for games and other primary files, 2TB for storage. Aftermarket cooler for mostly noise (thank me later), win7 included.

ed: always forget the cd/dvd drive... if you have a SATA compatible drive in your current computer, just steal it, otherwise just buy one for $20

Looks ok... not the prettiest case though but each has his taste...

And I'd still take 2xSpinpoint F3 1TB over that eco WD pos...

EDIT: No optical drive?

Tell me why it "doesn't work" without being a cunt.

And I have the same cooler, and I love it, and I seriously doubt she's going to OC.

It is being cunt telling you got wrong mobo and cooler is "a little" outdated for i7?
