Helmet Cam and Handheld Cam

I'm going on a snowboarding holiday with 4 friends and Finray, and I was wanting to get a Helmetcam to film the routes, and a handheld cam for filming shenanigans and goings on.

I have literally no idea about either in terms of value, performance etc. Not sure what my budget is at the moment, probably around £300 all in, but once I know a little bit more about them I can give you a less vague budget.

I recommend to just use a hand-held cam and forget the helmet cam. Reasons:
- The helmet cam will mess with your balance.
- If you fall it is harder to protect it from damage than one in your hand.
- You don't want to consciously move your head to film your run. You need your head to move freely with your body to maintain proper balance (see #1).
- Be a boss and handycam it.

The helmet cam 100% does not mess with your balance. I've used one. I was, however, very concious about falling on it ... I always seem to land on my head when I take a spectacular fall on my board. The moving your head thing kinda comes naturally ... if you're using a handheld you've still gotta point it.

I think a fair bit of this depends on how good you are at snowboarding and whether you're planning on filming on the move or not.

A friend of mine has a GoPro and it's pretty fucking awesome.

If you were skiing I'd say go with a helmet cam for sure, as holding a camera means you can't really use your poles.

Random thought: Don't bother with 1080p, just settle for 720p - it's not worth the extra cost. (As far as helmet cams go)

It was more that I just checked my speed frequently. I usually don't care much for my own safety (lol, well I do but you know) ... but having a £200 camera on my head made me think twice about flying down a hill at a billion miles per hour.

To give you an idea of all the ways it can be used/mounted. And it's a tough fucker, to break it you're going to have to be doing some damage to yourself, at which point 250 quid on a camera becomes irrelevant.
