Browning/FN Hi-Power  mark III, Single Action.
Do NOT get any of that DAO (double action only) garbage.

The old reliable Browning HiPower MkIII SA/DA in 9mm is probably the pistol I'm most accurate with.
It just fits into my hand like an old comfortable glove.
Tired, cold, hurt, in an awkward position, off-handed, in the dark, carrying too much equipment, or all of the above.. the hipower just fits my hand the same way, every time.  Accurate, repeatable, dependable.
A little more mechanically delicate than the HP USP, but given proper care, it's indestructable for all but the most abusive military users.

Or, for it's modern descendant, the HK USP 45 (w/ replacement HK barrel)
  • Browning derivative action.
  • Much more elegant, simple, and reliable action and trigger group.
  • Field disassembly (or reassembly) in 8 seconds, blindfolded, under field conditions.
  • All of the more delicate trigger group parts are well protected in the middle of the pistol, in one tight cluster of parts.
  • Repeatable two-handed point-of-aim, due to well designed grip/trigger/safety layout.
  • 10, 15, or 20 round magazines, in .45 ACP.
  • Threaded, O-ring slotted, polygonal rifled barrel = accurate and repeatable
  • 230gr hollow point rounds, moving at 925fps (just below mach 1), through a suppressor = hits hard at pistol engagement distances, doesn't blow your ears out indoors.  Exactly what a pistol is supposed to do, in my opinion.

https://imagehost.calabro.us/images/guns/usp6.jpg
(Note: not my pistol, but similar)

Or, get a good old M1911.
Depending on the manufacturer (and year of manufacture), they're either exceptionally accurate (We've lobbed rounds at 85 yards, from a good 1911, hitting 6 out of 7 rounds on average, on a 7"x7" target)  ... or exceptionally garbage.

The BDM is not a HiPower, wasn't impressed with the USP I tried either TBH.
I used to have a MKIII, only shot IPSC for laughs but used to kick all my friends butts, repeatably.

The most ergonomic and pointable pistol I've ever handled was the Beretta 7.65mm, its like its made of suction cups.

Browning BDM, HP-DA, BDAO, or whatever initials they want to call those monstrosities, look enough like a proper HiPower that the uneducated could accidentally purchase such a piece of shit and think they were getting a HiPower.

Hipower works well with a classical, one handed, standing edge-on (sideways) target shooter's grip.
(y'know, old school, with your off-hand thumb tucked into your belt)

USP is designed for a two handed, both eyes open, sights in line with the dominant eye, type hold.

100 years apart in their development, and the stances they're designed for show it.

I'm sorta waiting for a good deal on a Hi-Power to come along.  I'm not really shopping for any gun right now, I haven't bought a gun in at least two years, but I do like how BHPs handle and shoot, they're up there with the Sig P210 in terms of comfort and handling.

there's nothing wrong with Glocks, they're just very utilitarian.  My current bedside handgun is a G19 mostly because if I'm awoken at 3am I need a very simple, point and click interface.

Try a USP.
Or, the more recent, more ergonomic HK45

Does everything a Glock does plus,
has the option to shoot SA or DA (i.e. it has a proper hammer),
has a decocker (safety doubles as a decocking lever),
has a much better chamber design,
is more rugged and reliable (take them apart side-by-side)

3am, one in the chamber, hammer down -- pull the trigger in DA mode, and it's functionally the same as a Glock but with a better grip.
And, you can put a laser & flashlight combo under the barrel of a USP without any real effort.

When I buy another .45 it will probably be an HK45 or USP, I like 'em both, unless I can find a screaming deal on a Springer TRP.  Otherwise, I'm fine with the Glock, for now.  It points pretty well for me and eats whatever I feed it.  I can always switch it up with my P220 or something else.  But the pistol is only there if I can't get to the Mossberg.

LMAO.

Pretty much.
Me and my pistol may go exploring about, to discover what goes bump in the night.
My (ex-Army) redheaded wife, with our little girl next to her...  she is another story.
Get past me, and she will be significantly better armed, significantly more irritable, and significantly more likely to start putting gobs of fast moving metal in the air.
