Troubleshoot my PC

Right, I've been a lazy bastard with my pc the past year or so.. lot's of BSOD's, it's running slow, never defragged, I took the door off 6 months ago to change something and couldn't be assed to put it on again, and I just haven't bothered trying to find/fix the issue (I hate this stuff), living with my 3-BSOD a day PC for almost a year now.

So, in an attempt to save what's left of it, I thought I'd test everything and see how it all works. So, how do I do this? pref. without having to remove a lot of components etc, that just ends up bloody tbh.

Specs;

- Q9300
- Ati 4850
- 4GB 1066mhz
- ehh, what else do you need?

Memtest.

Sounds like memory/motherboard issue like I've had.

It never hurts to check ram. Put memtest on bootable USB stick and let it run for few hours (multiple passes).

btw what is your motherboard? PSU? HDD?

BSoDs usually mean memory or OS. Download Memtest and run it. If it's the memory, it'll start throwing errors almost as soon as you run it. If it doesn't, run it for 20 minutes at least to make sure it won't.

Try to get the code the BSoD is throwing, if it's restarting as soon as it finishes the memory dump, right Click on My Computer and go to Properties, then go to the Advanced tab and under the tab Startup and Recovery, press the Settings button. Uncheck the “Automatically Restart” box and press Ok.

Once you get that code, you can google it for further support.

I've unticked auto-restart, Finray, will keep it on over-night and come with a code tomorrow.

@memtest - shit, need to find a memory stick then ehh?

@Panzer: mobo is P35-DS4 - Asus, I think.

Reason for running the memtest off bootable USB is that you get much more accurate results without OS loaded on your ram.

Of course if it is bootable disk. Though everyone has some sort of USB stick around these days, you can do it many ways.

You can run some within OS, but like I said they are not as accurate. Better off doing it properly so you can rule out ram as problem.

While I search the house for a blank CD/usb stick...

My HDD suddenly disappeared from "My computer" today - while it was in use (utorrent).

Could that be a mobo thing?

It can be anything, would help if you get the BSOD code. We'll move on when the ram is tested.

Oh and when do these BSODs happen? Gaming, 2D work? While torrenting?

And if there is a file mentioned in the BSOD screen, that would be extremely helpful.

BSoDs happen at all time. When I left you all last night, I let the PC stay on and sure enough, it was there when I woke up.

Ran memtest...

The multi-core one wouldn't run at all, so I went with the dual core program;

I didn't have time to read the results before my PC booted - the loading bar thingy reached around 80% or so, then the screen was flooded with a bunch of numbers and instantly went into a reboot.

So the computer crashed before you could even complete one pass of memtest86?

Do you have 2 x 2GB modules or 4 x 1GB? You should prob test each stick individually in each slot. This will help determine if its the mobo memory controller or the DIMMs.

how long is this test supposed to take? It's been stuck at 16% for 7 minutes now.

It says "Test #2 [Moving inversions, ones & zeros]"

Further down it says, among other things;

Time: 0:00:03
Cached: 1023M
Pass: 0
Errors: 5

Error confidence value: 18
Highest Error address - 4095.9MB
Bits in Error - Total: 32 Min: 1 Avg: 16
Errors per Memory slot: 0: 6

This is with 1x1GB in the slot closest to the CPU, btw. Do I assume there's something wrong and try a new stick/slot, or wait 'til it reaches 100% (still at 16% when pressing submit, btw, and the screen hasn't changed in forever)?

If it's throwing errors now, then you've found either a) the right stick or b) the right slot.
