If it's throwing errors now, then you've found either a) the right stick or b) the right slot.

this.  Keep testing each Dimm.  If they all throw errors in slot A1 then move to B1.  Im assuming you have two memory banks with two slots each (total 4 slots)?

Testing memory is trial and error baby.

Stick #1 threw erros in slot 0 and 2
Stick #2 threw erros in slot 0, 1, 3
Stick #3 threw errors in slot 0
Stick #4 threw erros in slot 0 and 3

(Didn't test any other combinations)

So, unless I have some crazy combination of broken slots and sticks, it seems either all my slots or all my sticks are broken, no?

That's damn weird. Err, I'd say all sticks are borked.

anyway I can check if it's not just all the slots?

I mean, I'd much rather have the sticks broken than the mobo, but I don't want to run and buy sticks and come home to them not working..

Stick 1 in slot 1, 2, 3, 4
Stick 2 in slot 1, 2, 3, 4

etc etc to determine if it's mobo or not.

ok then

(no blood yet, *crosses fingers*)

So sticks 2, 3 and 4 have all failed all slots. Work on the last two for #1 now.

HOWEVER, I noticed that 1, 3 and 4 all threw up 5 errors, while #2 has given 17 errors on all accounts. Could be a sign of it being the RAM and not the mobo, yes?

Stick #1 has now failed all four slots. Ok, wrap-up;

  • All four sticks have failed in all four slots.
  • They all always fail on test #2 [Moving inversions, ones & zeros]
  • Stick 1,3,4 all have 5 fails on all occasions, stick 2 has 17 on all occasions

I'd say it's the RAM, just because of the discrepancies in the errors. See if you can borrow some RAM from a friend or something that you know is working, or buy some new stuff. If it's the mobo, you can always return it.

If it's all dead on all slots that suggests a b0rked memory controller tbh.

EDIT: ie new mobo time

I'd rather sleep on a rock than buy a new mobo tbh.

@Finny: I don't have any friends that know what RAM is, tbh.

I guess I'll go buy a stick of ram and see if it helps, unless anyone has a way to determine if this is ram or mobo

Test potentially broken ram in different pc with memtest?
I'd type my pc specs out all fancy again but teh mods would remove it. Again.

I don't have a second DDR2 mobo

Sounds like mobo. Good RAM shouldnt fail all 4 slots on a clean mobo.

Upgrade time, posh boy!

Borrow a friends? Seems a bit of a long shot though.
In all honesty:

Edit: Errors don't seem to be matching though, buy some cheap ass ram and if it continues just return the stuff saying you didnt need it.

hold on a tic...

what motherbaord do you have?

Exactly which ram do you have?

What timings and voltages are you running in the BIOS?

Asus P35 DS4
OCZ SLi 1066mhz 4x1GB

I dunno the voltages, but I reset the CMOS recently so they should be default. Should I go check?

The inconsistent errors are the same ones I got with my mobo issue.

Wow to quality companies.  Yea, Im gonna go with the memory controller as well.  There is the chance the bad memory controller fucked your ram too.

RMA it.

A thought: up the NB voltage a bit, do the same for the ram voltage.

Also make sure the settings in BIOS match the ones printed in the side of the sticks.

Then test one stick in all four slots and see if anything changed.

My BIOS settings weren't as standard as I thought...

That's a LOT of extra VDIMM. Would explain quite a lot. I hate BIOS settings that just tell you how much extra it adds though, because you then have no idea what it's starting from.

Oh.

Strange, I haven't done anything in the BIOS in a long time, and since then have reset the CMOS on several occasions (which has removed my CPU overclock, apparently not VDIMM voltages is seems...)

Fuck you, Jens, as soon as I help you in this thread mine starts dying too.

Symptoms: Programs crashing constantly first day, second day (today) I get BSoDs about memory management.

another RMA.

Bothered to validate those symptoms before throwing in a blind RMA?
