Oh.. I know the one. The transformer in the AC adapter is fucked.
Seems to happen regardless of the cord (tried 3).

Yar.

On an interesting sidenote, the now-recurring hum I'm getting goes away when I simply unplug the audio in from one of my monitors.

haha oh my

Edit: but yeah, I kinda know your pain.. I'm getting a slight hum from the CD player or amp.. but it may actually be the fridge in the kitchen (otherside of the wall), cause it hums like a motherfucker when doing those more intense cooling cycles.. but I can't properly tell cause of my tinnitus. . . and/or the houses wiring is probs shit

Iknowright?

It hums when the 3.5mm isn't connected to anything
It hums when the 3.5mm is plugged in, on/off/playing
It doesn't hum when the 3.5mm is connect, is playing, out of a single speaker

Probably cheap-ass cabling.

Hmm.
Well, try a quick cross plug (swap your RCA plugs around (i.e. L->R;R-L)), if the problem persist in the new side (i.e., hum with cable plugged in) it's the cable... if it stays (i.e. you have to unplug the same speaker) it's not the cable.....

and since you are using two cable, you might have to do it twice.
(At the very least, see if you can get a 3.5mm Male -> 2x TS, that way you only have one cable.)

I haven't "tried" anything. I can't just order $100+ parts for giggles. (plus, I'm not at home)

ed: The cabling has nothing to do with the screeching though, i'm positive. That's concern #1.

So then what else do you want? I've given you some suggestions (that are actually free, or at least a buck at the hardware store) that will at least tell you what your problem is....

Seriously Bevo? You drive an expensive truck but can't afford a 100$ component (that you can sell if it doesn't meet your needs)? I don't get it.

but seriously, you probably have one. try it. if it works, then we know it's a power issue.
(and if you don't feel safe, try this)

I'll start with a grounding adapter thing.

Yea. Hence, the ground lift, and if that's the problem, then you move up.

No. You need one that would go from an "ungrounded" (two prong outlet) to "grounded" (three-prong). The one in your link is a 3prong to 3-prong

And this can potentially stop the screeching/hissing coming from my AC adapter? Or is this for the hum? Or both?

It will (as long as you don't connect the tab on the adapter) remove the house ground line from your system. In a lot of audio systems, the ground line can introduce a lot of hum- if it's dirty, or has actual current leaking onto it, whatever. In the pro audio where I work, ground lift is one of the first things we try for a hum- but ground noise isn't exclusively 'hum'- I've had bad mechanical noise off a ground too.

If you REALLY want to know that this will put you in the right direction, you could try and simply un-plug the laptop's power cord, if the noise goes away is indeed something along that line, most likely a ground issue.

Of course, this isn't to say it's going to definitely fix your issue, but from my PERSONAL experience, my laptop has a bad grounding issue on the audio (bad as in, really dirty mechanical noise leaks on, similar to a whiny-hum-hiss), and lifting the ground seems to solve that issue for me.
