So, say ESPN or SkySports or whatever sends a football match - for how long do they own the rights to clips from the match? Or even a recording of the entire match?

Assuming you are to post it on a public web-site, how long must you wait until it becomes legal? Or does that not happen?

The length of time varies depending on the country but it could be anywhere between 20 and 75 years from the laws I can find. During that time they would own the rights to all of the data (images and sound) they recorded or broadcasted and it would not be legal for you to post on a public website.

Sky sports news is leaving freeview so nobody is going to watch it anymore. If you get sky, you ain't gonna be watching the news.

Obviously it's different in music, but anyway, intellectual copyright exists until 70 years after the author of the copyright has died. So I imagine the copyright on tv will last ages.
