Regardless of why they joined, they still have the courage to do something that the majority of the population doesn't.

Again, don't want to sound like I am putting the guy down, I don't know him or anything about him.
Admirable means worthy of admiration.
He himself said he is doing this because it is what is necessary for his situation, and good for him on that...
But should we all really ADMIRE someone who settles for something out of a lack of better options?

I´m with Viktor on this one. I can´t speak for America of course, but in Germany/Austria service is somewhat less helping your country than civil service (which is the alternative). But no one admires those, who chose to feed old bed-ridden people, clean them up or drive people in wheelchairs to the theater or their families.
There is a certain glorification going on with the military. No doubt, the institution itself is good, you take a lot of shit but you get much in return, but I just can´t and won´t understand the admiration people are getting, just for signing up.
I myself was in a situation where I seriously considered joining the armed forces not too long ago, despite having them turned down as draftee to become a civil servant.

Well it seems it varies for country to country and from each individual. I don't have an all encompassing respect for everyone in the military, far from it. Anyone who choose a combat role when they have other options I admire though. Someone who joins and goes and becomes a logistics driver or a HR and finance person I wouldn't really call a soldier.Sisco wrote:

How about you watch Zulu 911 and read up on the dutch marine corps. And maybe the history of this country in Europe.-Sh1fty- wrote:

I can see you point. A lot of my friends joined the army and some of them and many of their there new found friends kept boasting on about how tough they were with being a soldier and all, yet they served drinks in the officers mess or something like that. Idiots.jord wrote:

I think its more the politics behind the army that I dislike. While the courage to put oneself into combat and getting shot at sure is admirable, the reason why they got send there often is not. In my opinion anyways.
It´s a touchy subject and its hard to determine right and wrong.

I don't think there is a right and wrong, every individual has their own differing reasons. I wouldn't even say the majority in the infantry had no prospects, they were actually pretty intelligent men that could've gone on to higher education if they wished.Sisco wrote:

Too bad the military doesn't prize intelligence enough to fairly promote enlisted personnel.
Unless she's got a ring on her finger, she's got no claim on you. Colossal waste of time and effort being with someone who won't support themself.jord wrote:

rdx, that country is so small he'll probably be stationed within a half hour of his hometown Jodie only works long distance.

Didn't you hear? Girlfriend's the new wife. Just about all our employees have them, and nearly all of them are just as pussywhipped as if they were married. "Oh, boo-hoo, I need to take Father's Day off."JohnG@lt wrote:

If it's sunny weather, I usually am. Sometimes on national holidays, too. Sucks if you're into the entitlement thing, though.JohnG@lt wrote:

Contracting. Concrete/asphalt repair, signs, painting and other stuff that doesn't care for the rain. Pays well, but small businesses don't exactly have huge reserves of employees to take up slack for very long vacations.JohnG@lt wrote:
