The streets are in ruins, the heritage housing has to be torn down and demolished, major public buildings have huge structural problems and will be closed for months if not years.
Some reports put the damage bill to as high as $40. amirite folks?

Surely a NZ politican will use this to his advantage and reclaim his rightful place as the true king of gondor.

NZ Coat of Arms

Srsly 3 Hobbits could defeat the NZ Army.

What's with the bondage sheep in the coat of arms?

I've lived here all of my life, proud New Zealander, I've seen the coat of arms thousands of times and yet it never occurred to me the significance of the bondage sheep.
On the NZ Army - we're small, we're not very well equipped. That's true. Still, you won't find a soldier in the world who'd want to fight against NZ troops. It's a similar situation to the US Marines who don't get a huge amount of funding and resources from the Navy who prefer to spend their money on, you know, ship stuff. This means the Marines adapt, they use alternate training with less reliance on technology and more on skills. The result is an extremely capable and well-trained soldier.
There's a reason that the only man to ever win two combat VCs was a Kiwi. There's a reason that the NZ SAS is recognised as one of the best special forces in the world.
Anyway, news on the quake - looks like PM John Key won't be able to make his trip to visit the Queen. Sucks for him I guess. On the bright side the clean-up is set to boost the construction sector and the NZ economy - given that most insurance firms are overseas it should mean a decent boost too.

Yeah, air support is overrated anyway
When I first read this I thought you were going to talk about how NZ is such a nice country and how they don't have any enemies in the world. Then you start talking about US Marines and SAS and I'm like ''alright Tyrone, how bout you deal with those ducks then''Ty wrote:

I don't think us marines are particularly underfunded. I also think a VC is a VC, massive respect to anyone who has earned one and a tad more to the 3 s that have earned it twice.
I'll miss shadowfax though.

The bondage sheep is there to attract Australian tourists, they seem to love that sort of thing for some reason I think its meant to reference weighing sheep or wool.
The CBD and a couple of suburbs were hit quite hard. Some buildings in the CBD are being damaged more by aftershocks. Demolition of condemned structures has already started. The biggest one at risk is a 7 storey brick building, though I know a 17 storey building was also evacuated after cracks were found.

^ A map/animation thing showing quake locations, magnitude etc. Sort of looks like defcon.

Hey Pubic you know the one thing I haven't heard new of through this whole thing? The state of the Christchurch Cathedral. I mean big old stone building, definite quake risk, Christchurch/NZ icon, you'd think they'd report on whether it's damaged or not, especially since they dedicated weeks of media coverage into whether the Sky Tower was straight or not. I swear I've heard nothing about how it fared in the quake. Got any update for me on that?

Well, no army is going to want to fight NZ troops, but mainly because its cold and wet there, plus they have earthquakes.Ty wrote:
