I've been involved on near miss head-on situations before, and yes, in that split second, thoughts do come to mind to protect the loved ones in the vehicle. Time seems to just slow down, giving you time to think and react.

This kind of thing shouldn't be over-analysed. Whatever hapened happened. A kid will now grow up without a dad and a dad will never get to meet their kid. That's all that realy matters.
Oh, and of course the people who caused it getting the book and a bunch of other things thrown at them. That matters too.
