You should be familiar with the Rorty and the Delbanco as well as having read Chapter 8 of Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America. Please read the handouts of the political documents available from the departmental office. In addition to these read the essay by Sunstein, ‘The Enlarged Republic – Then and Now’ – also a handout – this will not only give you a better understanding of the debate between the Federalists and anti-Federalists (‘Publius’ and ‘Brutus’) but also give you an idea of how throughout the course the texts and contexts in American literature and philosophy will be read alongside current critical issues. G. K. Chesterton wrote: "America is the only nation in the world that is founded on a creed. That creed is set forth with dogmatic and even theological lucidity in the Declaration of Independence. . . .". In this first seminar we will be discussing the importance of the Declaration of Independence for America’s self-identity.
