Budget: ~$1000 USD

Necessities:
Complete set of parts for tower.
Monitor.
Keyboard.
Mouse.

Machine will be used for gaming, school work, music playing, and possibly video and image editing.

I will be getting an external hdd for all my music and such. I will be transfering my files from my iMac to the new machine.

Ideal parts:

- 500GB hdd or better
- However much RAM Windows 7/ my budget can handle
- Future proof graphics card that can run all current games maxed out.

Suggestions?

Say what? I haven't kept up with current part news in over year. Care to fill me in?

Sorry, but GPU and CPU on one chip is the last thing I would want. I like being able to have the parts separate. Certainly it'd be much faster in having it all on one chip, but I really doubt the average user would notice...

Yea. It makes sense on mobile devices where you obviously want the benefits of these all-in-one chip systems but in a consumer PC it makes no bloody sense.

Well here's an attempt at a current $1000 build.

-$45 in mail in rebates and you could cut the cost down on mobo, maybe RAM.

Thanks for that. It looks pretty solid to me. That will be a good starting point. Do you think it would be worth opting for 6GB of RAM?

Its up to you. Since it runs in dual channel you would have to get 2x2gb and 2x1gb. 4GB would do you fine for starters, then later on you can always grab an extra 2 or 4gb if you feel you need it.

Don't bother with mixed sticks, 4GB or 8GB, never 6GB with dual channel.
