PSU - need additional 6-pin PCI cabled

Hi all,

I've got a new Radeon 5870 on the way and have just spotted the two 6-pin pci cables requirement.
Mines has only got one that I can find, plugged into current card.

I've seen that there are cables which can be used to convert into another 6-pin pci like the one below.

I had a look inside my case and I have a bunch of cables which end with connectors that look like they might fit the item I've linked on Amazon.

If anyone could confirm that these are what I need to use that would be great as I've never really dealt with power supplies much. There seems to be eight of them altogether, the seven unconnected ones in my hand, and one that links with another cable to the DVD drive I think.

I think I also read you need to make sure you use two from different lines or rails? Am I right in assuming these eight cables are paired in sets of two and if so how to tell which are pairs?

the card should come with an adaptor, but those are the correct cable.

Good to hear

Card arrived today and had the adapter.
I'm still a little confused about the part on the manual saying make sure you plug the two adapter connectors into separate psu cables. I can't see how you could physically plug two connectors from the adapter into just one of the psu cables from my pictures. Unless you broke off the plastic covers and plugged two bits in and left one bit hanging from each of the connectors...is that what it's saying you shouldn't do?

Is it being unnecesarily confusing? Can I just pick any two of the sockets from the psu in my hand and plug them into the two connectors on the adapter, then plug 6-pin part into gpu? Or am I having a derp moment and missing something obvious?

I think it means make sure the adapters are plugged into different strands. There are multiple 4-pin connectors/branches on one main strand, so try to use different strands altogether as opposed to different branches.

This. You should connector to molex connectors (the 4-pin ones) as close to the PSU as possible and on different strands / cables.

Hey,

Think everything seems to be in order now. I straightened all the cables out and found 4 sockets on one strand and 4 on another. The dvd drive was connected up with the first socket on one strand so I did as you suggested max and moved it up one so the adapter was as close as possible to psu.

I was a little worried as the suggested psu on box was 500 and mines is only 550 but I think it should be fine. Seems to run about 40 degrees on GPU with 30% fan speed on idle.

Ran Crysis on 1920x1080, anti alias X 8 and all settings on Very High for 20 minutes to see what would happen. Climbed over the first 5 minutes up to 65 degrees GPU and 60% fan speed then stabilised at that for the next 15. Should be okay I think...

Only thing I was concerned about is a stray cable resting on the card in the picture here. It's sitting against the edge, just touching the board side with all the chips etc on it. Is this likely to damage the card in any way or will I be fine?
