tazz: Ive got the Ubuntu thing working, and Im up to the step where I can click into the hard drive. I can go inside it, but there is only the C drive partition there which has been reformatted, since I reformatted it a few hours ago. Is there any way to see the other partitions, or any other advice you could give?

Cat: I was thinking I could do that, but wasnt sure if it was due to viruses, which might prove to be a bit hazardous. I tried doing chkdsk, and it said that 'there is one or more unsolvable problems', or something along those lines.
And yes, its a Gigabyte 965P-S3

Soz, was out last night.

in ubuntu, open up gparted.

If you've formatted, you obvs dont care about any data that might be on it??

This is what my ubuntu box looks like:

IF there is another partition... you can note the partition location "/dev/sda1 or whatever.

You can mount this partition by using the commands in that previous guide.
everything i write is a ramble and should not be taken seriously.... seriously.

I can also add that through gparted, you can delete all of the existing partitions and create a blank drive, to which you can then install back onto.

It seems liek you've tried this however, so i'm back to thinking the drive is faulty.

PS: If you're booting into ubuntu live, i think it's safe to say that your PC is fine. Although, it isnt using the sata controllers, or IDE, considering whatever you use, they could be fried too, but that's unlikely.

Hardware issues for PCs are always fun

Im looking in GParted now, and its got the hard drive listed as 931.51GiB. Is it suppose to be partitioned or one whole drive?
When I click on it (its got the yellow caution icon like your sda4), its says its not mounted, and the warning says:
"The device /dev/sda1 doesnt exist.

ntfsresize v2.0.0 (libntfs 10:0:0)
ERROR(2): Failed to check '/dev/sda1' mount state: No such file or directory
Probably /etc/mtab is missing. Its too risky to continue. You might try an another Linux distro.

Unable to read the contents of this file system!
Because of this some operations may be unavailable"

I dont want to format the whole drive, because theres a shiteload of stuff on there that I want to have. I was fine with formatting C, but the other partitions I feel I need to keep.

Okay, cool. Status update:

Ive reformatted an old hard drive. Got that working with windows. Ive connected the troubled drive up, and can see it in disk management. I can see the four partitions of the old drive, but problem is that two partitions are 'unallocated', which im guessing is that they're fucked. The two other partitions appear to be healthy, but have (unknown partition) in brackets after healthy. In the %free tab, they're both listed to be completely devoid of data :\.
If I right click on the 'unallocated' partitions, the options to select are:
- new partition
- properties
-help
If I right click the 'healthy (unknown partition)' partitions, the options are:
- delete partition
- help

Im not exactly sure what to do now. I would like to recover as much data as possible from each partition, too.
