Stephen Colbert launched a comedy sneak attack on Congress Friday. He submitted serious testimony to a judiciary subcommittee hearing on the issue of farm workers and immigration, but when it was his turn to speak, the talk show host slipped into character as a satirical conservative to make his points in support of more favored status for migrant farm laborers.

"This is America," he told the panel. "I don't want a tomato picked by a Mexican," he said. "We do not want immigrants doing this labor."

He tried to enter images from his colonoscopy into the Congressional Record during a riff on how Americans should eat less roughage. Then Colbert recalled his day spent picking vegetables at an upstate New York farm earlier this summer.

"I'll admit, I started my day with a preconceived notion of immigrant labor," he said.

"I have to say, and I do mean this sincerely: Please don't make me do this again. It is really, really hard," Colbert said, pretending to choke up.

And he didn't stop there.

On the bill dealing with immigrant workers, Colbert quipped, "Like most members of Congress, I haven't read it." He sarcastically expressed confidence that as the bill moves forward, "both sides will work together as you always do."

That was one of the rare jokes that actually drew a good laugh from the packed committee room.

Colbert then concluded his opening statement by saying, "USA, No. 1."

Since I didn't want to derail the other thread...

I thought the Congress hit rock bottom with the whole baseball thing. What a stupid stupid waste of time, who the hell thought this would have been a good idea?

Am I totally missing something here or does this come off as the dumbest shit Congress has done in awhile?

When he tried to submit his Colonoscopy photos into the Congressional record I think that was over the top.  But he's a Satirist and that's what he does.  Why should anyone be surprised.

I <3 Colbert.

Congress having hearings about baseball users on steroids, inviting comedians to testify on other issues, and passing 10,000 page bills they've never even read.
Electoral college electing Bush Junior and Obama, back to back.

Please, someone tell me the US government of this century to date has been a bad piece of performance art by Joaquin Phoenix.

Unfortunately unlike Joaquin Phoenix fake documentary 'I'm Still Here', politics as you described them are quite real.

I wouldn't say it was a waste of time.  Hell, it's not like we aren't already wasting billions upon billions on all kinds of other bullshit.

I mean, if we have to pick between one form of bullshit from another, I'd at least prefer an entertaining form of it.

We've spent countless amounts on propping up banks, pork, and old people, so what does one comedian cost us in comparison?

Just chalk it up to the rollercoaster ride that is American government.  The rest of the world can complain as well, but even they have to admit that we provide hours upon hours of amusement.

I saw Colbert's testimony in full when given.  I did watch the first segment on the daily show as you requested.  Only familiar thing was the opening guitar riff.  Honestly though, Stewart was just as lame as he pointed Fox out to be.  John looks a bit bloated and tired these days.  Actually my opinion of him dropped a notch after viewing.  His direction and delivery was both predictable and tired.  On an important note.... I'm glad congress found the time to limit television commercial volume though.  If only they had time to do a budget.

TBH I reckon both of them hit their peaks at the end of 08/beginning of 09 and have been nowhere near as good since.

Actually both Stewart and Colbert just had their most-watched and highest rated summer ever.

DB.. the main point was to riff congress  (Dems) and the little bit of work they have done. Again, I think you are so focused on the hits against traditional GOP mouthpieces (like FOX) that you miss the larger point.

Little bit of work they've done?  What more damage could they do?  What expectations did he hold them to before his skewering?  Did they not do enough to his liking?  Or did he expect fiscal conservatism from them or something?  Close gitmo?  Legalize it?  Tear down unions?  What does the man really stand for -other and being a dick?

I really could give f'all towards news agencies.  They're all biased.  News sells, who do you want to buy your papers from?

I'm aware of that, but I found them funnier back then.

DB even from you this is blinkered. The Dems have been waaaaaaaaaay short of people's expectations. Obamacare was a flop, cap&trade hasn't happened, Gitmo took way longer than it should have etc. etc.

Well, yeah...  Of course the Democrats were short of expectations.  They campaigned as liberals and ended up being watered down corporatists.

What does he stand for? I guess I'll have to remind you he is Comedy Central. He stands for entertainment (first). The point wasn't that "they should have done this or that". It was that they haven't been able to do a lot of what they said they would do. It's a mockery of Pelosi and her "there is a new Congress in town" attitude.
