What happens if you shoot someone in the face with a sniper rifle? That's right, absolutely nothing...

Wow kind of like when you try to knife someone. You get that dust, seems like you hit them but you didn't. Pretty annoying

In the video, the dust is where your shot registered. However, by the time your shot registered, the target had already moved (lag). Try leading your shot a little more when using Fraps, I find that sometime if I shoot the air in front of a moving target I get the hit.

FWIW, I OC my video card when I Frap (this made a big difference)!

The dust is on your machine, not the server. If you shoot someone during lag, he'll convulse and be dusty but he's not dead, and has probably killed you.

The best solution to this.  Don't play sniper!  While the kit is handy sometimes, most of the time it is nothing but a hinderence to the team.  We don't need 10 snipers on a team.  A SRAW or an Eryx to the face would also solve your hit box problem.

Spoken like a true n00b.  Use this AT weapon to kill troops.

I do not think it is lag, I have had it happen on single player.  I will shoot a bot, and miss.  Shoot the same area again, bot did not move, and get a headshoot.

Edit:  Here are some additional footage of the same glitch.  These are a little better, since the person being shot and the sniper are standing close to each other.  Also, it shows the shoot while the sniper is zoomed in.  They also do not have the slow motion/lag that the video in the first post did.

Wow that looks annoying, getting sweet shots like that only to be rewarded with a grenade to the face

what everybody doesnt realize is this has nothing to do with the sniper rifle or knives. its with every bullet from every gun. i have shot ppl with guns where i know all my bullets hit but it took a 6th or 7th bullet to down him because of lag. the difference is that with automatic weapons you have bullets to spare. with a knife or a sniper rifle, every hit is critical, so ppl notice their "lost" bullets more.

i dont know where all the poor hit registering comes from because i have had pings of under 20 on many servers and had this happen to me. although i have been on servers with good ping but the server gets bogged down and i still get lag. so this may be a server load issue.

anyways get a shotgun or a pkm. it will solve all your problems

In case BF2 has no ping-compensating, you need to lead a running target (3m/s) with a ping of 20ms approximately by 2*20ms*3m/s = 12cm or 5inch AT LEAST!

Why? Assuming a ping of 20ms, you see a guy on your PC, but in reality he is already a bit further, because the information you got from the server is 20ms old. Now you shoot the guy, but your information takes 20ms to to the server, so effectively you have to compensate 40ms. That means, shoot there where the enemy will be in 40ms.

But i think DICE implemented some kind of compensation for the feared "client side hits" well known from bf1942, because i seldom had client side hits in bf2 regarding vehicles. Remember DC? Trying to hit a slightly moving helo with a tank? You had to lead A LOT!
