It was a sample size of about 3,500 people. Margin for error in a group that large is very small.

Most Atheists and Agnostics I know share the same background, religion was present in our childhood so we got the basics of (in my case Christianity) at Church or from our families. When we started having doubts we looked for answers in other faiths so we read a few books on Judaism, Islam, Hinduism and so on. Buddhism for instance is a teenage dream.

So if you are a believer all your life it is common to only know about your faith since you see it as the true one.

On the contrary as Atheists we are always being asked to justify our position so knowing the basics of every major faith is again common and expected.

I think the context of that motto was that the truth was being covered up and that he was being pushed into not believing by his superiors.
