per http://www.nytimes.com/2010/09/27/us/27wiretap.html

"...law enforcement officials contend that imposing such a mandate is reasonable and necessary to prevent the erosion of their investigative powers.

“We’re talking about lawfully authorized intercepts,” said Valerie E. Caproni, general counsel for the Federal Bureau of Investigation. “We’re not talking expanding authority. We’re talking about preserving our ability to execute our existing authority in order to protect the public safety and national security.”"

The US gov't (and apparently other major world powers' governments - see article) are considering forcing communications companies to alter the way they operate in order to facilitate easier government monitoring.

"Essentially, officials want Congress to require all services that enable communications — including encrypted e-mail transmitters like BlackBerry, social networking Web sites like Facebook and software that allows direct “peer to peer” messaging like Skype — to be technically capable of complying if served with a wiretap order. The mandate would include being able to intercept and unscramble encrypted messages..."

Thoughts?

I would have thought that the intercept would occur perhaps along the transmission line, and not at the service involved.  As in, why not tap the line and deal with ALL the traffic for the IP in question at the ISP level?  Maybe a network engineer can tell me why that's not reasonable?

And the part about breaking the encryption being necessary--that's total crap.  People can talk in code on the phone and the government can't get their panties in a knot when they listen in (lawfully, of course).

Edit: Now that I've read the article, I can see why my idea wouldn't work as easily as I had thought...lol

I'd rather double tap the director that came up with this proposal.
