So, there's this openly gay student body president at the University of Michigan named Chris Armstrong.
Apparently, Andrew Shirvell, the Assistant Attorney General of Michigan, didn't like that a gay guy was elected president there. So, he decided to create a blog, slander Armstrong in some pretty appalling ways, and protest outside his house.
CNN did an interesting interview with him...
Well, after all of the attention this garnered, Mike Cox (yes, that really is his name), the Attorney General of Michigan and Shirvell's boss, agreed to do an interview with CNN shortly thereafter.
While Mike Cox might be correct that Shirvell has the right to speak his mind via the First Amendment, Anderson Cooper's sticking point in this is that Shirvell is clearly acting in a way that is "unbecoming" of someone in his position because of the importance of it.
Cox basically spends the entire interview dodging this simple truth. But then again, it's not really surprising. Cox is a religious fanatic who was elected by religious fanatics, and Shirvell was one of his campaign managers.
So, what do you guys think of this mess? Should Shirvell be fired, or is the First Amendment really applicable in preserving his job?
