It is that time of the year again so here is what we have now:

Cayman XT (HD 6970?) Engineering Sample

-replaces HD 5870, do note this is not dual GPU card like HD 5970, that will be HD 6990 according to rumors.

Good for AMD. I hope their rebranding works out for them, because I like it.

Not a fan of them changing their naming scheme like that.

It's got to happen sooner or later, and by now I'm sure all the builders know there isn't any difference. ATI.com currently takes you to AMD.com, so why shouldn't the printing on the card reflect that fact? Hopefully, it'll help their publicity war against Intel.

talking about calling it 6970 instead of 5870, thats crap if its true.

Who cares about the name. If its got good price/performance ratio then it could be called "AMD bigfloppydonkeydick" for all I care

Uh because they have used the same number system for awhile now, and now may be calling their cards by deceiving number, is that really hard for you to understand?

I understand that they have been using the same system for a while now... but are you really deceived by the number? Look at the specs and benchmarks, thats what you need to know not whether it uses a 8 or a 9 in its number....
As for deceiving numbers, I think nVidia has been at that game a lot longer

Not at all decieved, but there is no reason to change the numbering from what should be the number for their top end single gpu card to what should be their top end dual gpu card, for any other reason than to confuse the market and potentially bump up the price point of the card. Of course Nvidia is worse for it, their whole re-branding system did factor in to my decision to buy a 5850 for my current card.

So is the 6xxx series just a re-worked 5xxx series? or are there actual major differences in the cards?

iirc, before the 5000 series, the dual cards were just designated as the single GPU equivalent core followed by x2, like the 4870x2 and 4850x2

Yeah, but you are missing the point here.

X2 was easy to recognize as dual GPU card, HD 5970 not so, and now they are at least planning to use 6970 for single GPU card which is odd as it is not ment to replace HD 5970, but the HD 5870. Real dual GPU replacement for HD 5970 would be HD 6990.

Confused enough now? Well thats the point in PR perspective. And people complain about NVIDIA naming standards!

Btw it is AMD's benefit to hide the fact top models are really dual GPU cards with their flaws. That is why the dual GPU cards will not be recognizable from model numbers now and in future. Same goes for NVIDIA, no more GX2...

Whole family should be out by xmas. Barts PRO/XT will launch first (HD 5830/5850 replacements) followed by Cayman PRO/XT, dual GPU top model launch is going to be last and sometime in December afaik.

Of course, cannot say anything about real availability...

Looking real good AMD, not only is HD 6870 looking to be slower than HD 5870 but now they are talking about how they rename HD57xx to HD 67xx.

It is going to replace HD 5830 and HD 5850. I take it you haven't heard that they plan to name HD 5870 replacement as HD 6970. Which again is slower than HD 5970.

Confused now? Thats the idea I guess.

What about that chart that got released not too long ago showing the 6770 to be almost as fast as the 5870 (iirc)?

Forgive my tech noobishness, but aren't you supposed to make graphics cards faster and better as time goes on?
