Turns out the FBI can't place secret tracking devices properly.

Caught Spying on Student, FBI Demands GPS Tracker Back

The agent who initially spoke with Afifi identified himself then as Vincent and told Afifi, “We’re here to recover the device you found on your vehicle. It’s federal property. It’s an expensive piece, and we need it right now.”

Afifi asked, “Are you the guys that put it there?” and the agent replied, “Yeah, I put it there.” He told Afifi, “We’re going to make this much more difficult for you if you don’t cooperate.”

Why exactly don't you think they had a warrant? Of course they will have had a warrant.

There was a federal court ruling not too long ago that said law enforcement does NOT violate anyone's rights by placing tracking beacons on cars, even if they are parked in a private driveway, without a warrant.

It's more funny than any sense of outrage or whatever. Yeah these government types usually do have the right to do all sorts of crap, it's funny when people fuck with them though.

From the article if anyone in this thread bothered to read it-

His discovery comes in the wake of a recent ruling by the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals saying it’s legal for law enforcement to secretly place a tracking device on a suspect’s car without getting a warrant, even if the car is parked in a private driveway.
So Marine is right (shudder).

It's within the law in those states covered by that Federal court.  It shouldn't be within the law though...warrants exist for a reason.

11B--I don't know if they had a warrant in this case, but it doesn't matter since they didn't need one to begin with.

I understand that the FBI was legally allowed to do so, but the kid in me is thinking "finders keepers"

I can't believe they still use that cliche line, very unoriginal, maybe they mean it but the line lacks creativity and incentive.

It lacks incentive?  The people who have been tracking you for who knows how long (and know as much about you as they did), are involved in law enforcement, and CAN make your life very, very difficult use that line and it lacks incentive?  lolok

As everyone in the thread on Reddit was saying, I'd have immediately posted it to another country to fuck with them.

They'd probably try to charge you with larceny.  That's government property you just stole!

TBH, I'd try to put it on a police car... It's not stealing, just returning.
