Command Points are an Average of you teams points.  You don't get points directly.

So to get more points, help your Team to act as a Team...

Spot things for them do lots of UAV Scan and point out bad guys, Issue orders, Art to shake up the bad guys....

To check you command score, look at the top of the screen in the command window.  It'll tell you there.

PLZ tactics... what exactly makes a point go up in my command score?

This is incorrect, I've calculated my team's avg pts before and it didn't equal my commander score.

my speck of insignificant advice as a one-round commander, that didn't do too shabby until i kept getting TK'd intentionally by some complete a**hole?

scan every chance you get...UAV the important clusters and high-risk enemy movements to flags, and "lead your shot" with the artillery. if the enemy is on the move, place it a little ahead of them, then, hopefully if done correctly...the lottery of kills will await you. and if your team is in a bind, make sure you drop supplies in a clump, near squad leaders, and make sure they will know it's coming.

so in a nut shell?

scan like crazy!
UAV the problem-areas!
Arty big clusters! (especially on armor columns ...)
and supply to keep your troops from hating you. (that and hope that no teammate is a moron and decides to sit and wait for the Explosive Rain. that'll get you a fast mutiny. trust me...some people are simple opportunists. and bastards.

Well, it's right AND wrong.

Commander points are score thusly:

Everytime someone on your team scores x points (positive points, TKs etc do not count), this calculation is performed:

New Command Score = Old Commander Score + x / (number of people on your team)

Which is kinda like an average, but as the number of people on your team can change over the course of a round, and due to things like TKs, the commander score you get may not be the average of everyone's final score.

I've been a commander for a while now and I've realised it's the one thing I can do pretty well in the game.  Now I play commander every chance I get.

The quick and simple answer to your question is this:  help your team win the round.  There's two reasons for this:

First, your command points are doubled if you win.  Mostly this will result in a Gold Star unless you've got a few no-hopers and a really really good person on your team.

Second, you score points if you team scores points.  Direct your squads to take spawn points, destroy the opponent's assets, repair your own assets, kill the enemy.  Launching the UAV and scanning/spotting the enemy helps keeps your team alive and helps them kill the enemy.

Firing artillery only helps to reduce the enemy's tickets.  This doesn't score points in itself but it helps your team to win.  It also raises your personal stat for number of kills and can help you gain badges but it does not score points in the game.

One more tip: spawn as an engineer.  If the enemy destroys your assets (and they will try to) and no squad is able/willing to repair them, you can do it yourself.  Using a supply drop to do this is a waste - a squad leader may need a drop and you may not be able to give it, plus you do increase your repair stat and may get a badge for your work (but you don't get points).

I enjoy the run-n-gun aspects of BF2 as well as the more strategic aspects of being commander.  I play whichever I'm in the mood for.  I usually play commander when I've played infantry all day and want a slower pace or when I come home from a night out on the town and my reflexes aren't so hot.    Anyway, all valid points here but one thing I try to do is,  if your team is obviously dominating (say 50 points ahead with scores of 150 to 100) just let your team do all the killing.  Just don't use arty for a while.  While it is gratifying and helpful to get 5-10 arty kills, and it will help your k/d ratio, etc. but it does nothing at all for your points.  As long as your team has a comfortable lead, just stay on top of your UAV, scan often and spot, and keep your soldiers well-supplied so they can get kills themselves (and you share in the bounty).

Note:  obviously you want to use arty as effectively and as often as possible if the game is close.  This should only be done when a blowout seems inevitable.  If the score gap narrows, let the arty shower begin!

Amen.
Personaly I will never use arty on a carrier when it is the only flag controlled by the enemy (unless we are loosing, then everything counts). When commanding you gotta remember that the team is not your slaves, but your teammates. That tends to lighten their mood and cooperation, and usually that will lead to better scores as well.

except if you're in thailand, VoIP will break your speakers if you don't block everyone. i'm not insulting the thais or anythnig, but they have a habit of making the worst sounds for your speakers, extremely, extremely loud squealing and whining sounds, so loud you can't hear arty around you. and you hear it everytime someone on the squad dies. only way is to have a squad saynig "ENGLISH VOIP ONLY" and it works,...sometimes.
