Criminal Justice with the intent of going to Law School after. Though I don't really know where I want to go to Law School... somewhere in NYC preferably as the internship possibilities are higher.

Criminal Justice is for cops. You could have any undergrad degree, do well on the LSAT and go to a top law school. There's no such thing as 'pre-law'.

I realize that. I just think Criminal Justice would be a good base to start myself off on since I want to go into criminal law/work for the DA. My aunt's an ADA for Suffolk County atm actually.

It's about a 90/100. Actually, you needed a 93 to get into Albany as a Freshman, but if your SAT scores were good you could get in with a 89-90 or so. I did fantastic on my ACT, but my final GPA was only a 3.0.

i like the dutch system, though. your universities seem far more relaxed and just... more about innocent learning

the prestige and elitism and huge competition over here is ridiculous. i think it's like 50 applicants per accepted place for my course at the moment, and top5 english literature courses are like 250-300 to one. fucking insane considering pretty much every applicant will have the 'required' grades as a bare minimum.

3.5GPA is no way a 90%

over here in the UK a top rate degree mark from a top university (and top academic) is like 75-80%

80%+ is considered publishable/journal worthy, which is pretty mega for undergrads

IB isn't equivalent to english GCSE, it's equivalent to like 4-6 A-Levels, depending on subject difficulty/content

true, we are small and we only have like 20 universities.   Even the best ones always have space and dont cost a cent more. why is there such a big difference in size and quality in other countries?

You have a population of 16million, four times more than Norway, and our universities are very competitive.

why didn't you go to one, then?

are the clever, the bit less clever and the stupid separated in the US or UK at high school level?  here we have  VWO,  HAVO and VMBO

if you have done VWO you can go to uni   
if you have done HAVO you can do HBO (collage kinda thing,  way more practical and easier)
and after VMBO you can learn a profession

one uni is better in one coure than the other etc, and you see that at the best university for a course there are more applicants, but i think the quality difference isnt that big.

3.5 GPA if you go on the 4.0 scale really equates to a 87.5%, which I would say is a good summary of your coursework being mostly A's but some B's. That's where I'd like to be when I graduate, as I'm at about 3.33 right now due to some bullshit that happened freshman year.

Professional schools and such are quite competitive as well. Looking at most places, required GPA may be a 3.25 or something, but because of so many applicants and such, averages (for in my case, dental school) are a lot higher. I feel this is the result of our education system being rather poor, though. At least in many of the science classes I've taken, you can get an A by just using academic bulimia and then forget the subject. Courses where you actually have to think and reason may be hard, but I imagine they are of far more value to ones knowledge. Alas, the dotted line where you put your GPA on an application doesn't allow you to elaborate on why you got this or what you learned, because we only seem to care about shoving as many students through as possible, regardless of what they learn and retain.

We have General, Regents and Honors/AP. Only Regents and Honors/AP grads have a shot at going to college.

This only applies to New York State. Every state is different.

Yep.

Luckily, I kicked the shit out of the regents. Which may be a reason I got into most schools I applied to, even with my GPA not being what I wanted. That and my ACT score.

I just looked up your grading system... why is an A considered 75%? That's ridiculous...

Here:
A - 90-100%
B - 80-89%
C - 70 -79%
D - 65-70%
F - <65%
