and after VMBO you can learn a profession
We have General, Regents and Honors/AP. Only Regents and Honors/AP grads have a shot at going to college.

This only applies to New York State. Every state is different.
they must be
in ohio it goes:
general
college prep
advanced college prep
honors
AP
even college prep go to college . .at my school anyway. which was private, but the cp/general people were still really stupid

Hey, trig was a pain in the ass. My teacher didn't let us use our calculators and made us memorize the proofs for everything

but i almost feel uni is more of a privilege in the US with the absurd prices. What does a year of uni cost without rent for living on campus?

depends private or public and instate/outstate

UC(public) schools are like 11k a year for in state students while NYU (private) is 50k a year (blame cost of living in NYC) and most ivy leagues are around 40k.

Like I said, we rely on memorizing --> regurgitating facts most of the time. In my Honors English and some other classes, our tests were often essays on novels/plays or other works we read, so if you didn't read and interpret it, you were screwed. Compare that to AP Biology (which to be fair, really helped in introductory bio courses in college) where you were memorizing types of amino acids and enzymatic mechanisms. At least my AP Chem teacher was excellent, and I still use stuff I learned 3 years ago so I can just cruise through sections of what we're learning.

fucked up.  every uni costs €1600 per year + ~400 for books
and you get 1200/year and free public transport from the govt the first 5 years of uni

Do you have to pay 40k for the first year of university in the US?

If so, then that's ridiculous. It isn't even recognized as higher education in Norway, you're not even eligible for student-loans.

It depends on the state and the school. You have to stop thinking of the US as a giant monolith. The laws, the education systems, the taxes etc all change based on what state you are in.

In New York State, tuition at a state university or college is $2,485 per semester.

Most people around here don't think High School is hard... it's just a relief to finally get out of the public education system after 12 years in it.

there are some private high schools in the states that costs just as much if not more than college.

No. To get into a top firm you do need to graduate near the top in a top law school. But in those firms you'll just end up slaving away for ten years working 80 hours a week as some partners lackey while praying you can make partner yourself one day. Outside of that, anything is possible.
You're not going to get the same opportunities going to Vermont Law School compared to going to American University Law School.
The problem is people want to graduate and then start at some top job. Nobody believes in career progression anymore. In this example, starting off at a small firm and just working your way up through the years will always be available to anyone. I guess it takes too much time and effort, people just accept that you have to have contacts and go to the top schools and get the top grades to get anywhere, top grades and top schools are are just shortcuts, not necessarily an absolute requirement.

It's like how in games you get people who buy DLC which unlocks everything from the beginning, then you have those which play the game and rank up and unlock everything that way.

You're including room and board and stuff. Straight tuition I'm sure is a lot lower than $20k

yeah they are called public schools because that was their original name... dunno why the quotation marks

and the point is that at public school you network and chum in little societies and groups that will later be all the public service and politicians

in america the prep school boys just go to the city and become patrick bateman

much bigger social and cultural importance in the UK. class doesn't really matter in america: everyone's cozy and middle
