So I have this laptop, and when I turn it on, the monitor doesn't display anything. How can I troubleshoot this?

for a fatty you're a serious intellectual lightweight.
Do you hear any beep codes on start up?

you really should develop the OP more. from what you've posted, i'm going to ask if there's a battery and a powercord attached . . .
1. Turn on the laptop
2. Does the monitor work? If so, skip to step 4.
3. Fix it
4. It's fixed!

There's a battery but it's charged so no powercord.burnzz wrote:

Anyway, to me it seems like the laptop itself works fine, meaning it boots up without a problem. However, the screen just stays dark the entire time and won't display anything.
How do you know it boots up if you can't see anything?

Do you hear the whirring noises of fans and hhd movement?

Does the laptop have a VGA out? Try connecting a monitor to that if it does.
Yes, if it works with an external monitor, it's probably the monitor in the laptop that is the problem. If not, it could be anything.
Also try shining a flashlight at it, try to see if you can make anything out even though it's black.

The idea of any hi-fi system is to reproduce the source material as faithfully as possible, and to deliberately add distortion to everything you hear (due to amplifier deficiencies) because it sounds 'nice' is simply not high fidelity. If that is what you want to hear then there is no problem with that, but by adding so much additional material (by way of harmonics and intermodulation) you have a tailored sound system, not a hi-fi. - Rod Elliot, ESP
I'm only a prick to the people to deserve it. I haven't had any problems with anyone who has posted in this thread. (except for burnz but i think were now)Surgeons wrote:

Anyway, this morning I turned it on to try out all the advice you guys posted, but it worked. The screen displayed everything and the laptop booted up perfectly which means there was probably a wire that was dislodged or something like that.
Anyway, what should I do if this happens again? It was broken for about 6 months, and randomly started working again today, so I think this is temporary.
what kind of laptop is it?
Look in the owner manual, see if you can pop open the case and check for any loose wires... my guess is check power cables first.

Well, it broke again. So next step is to open it up and check for loose wires?
