Hi,

I thought it was about time I got on here and actually tried to get some help ! My PC is pretty much top-spec, using a 2mb connection - problem is, once I've got the game loaded and selectec a server to play on it takes an age to get the game loaded !

The loading progress bar moves across the bottom of the screen at a snails pace, usually taking a couple of minutes, but then when I get to the "Verifying Client Data" part it can take 10/15 minutes ... I have friends with machines and connections that aren't as good as mine and they're on in only a few moments.

Any ideas ? It's a problem on any server and was also a problem before we went wireless ... think they're must be a setting somewhere I've not found yet !

Cheers in advance for any help people !

2.4Ghz processer, 1 Gig RAM running XP (W/sp2), about 100+ GIG HD left. 16x DVD drive.
256MB Radeon 9600 Pro graphics card. Directx 9.0c

Running AOL9, 2Mb connection via a Netgear wireless router (DMZ enabled, UPnP enabled, fully access)

Still, the problems existed whilst I was still running a wired connection and I can play all my other online games without the problem.

I have all my settings on medium and 'verifying client data' takes 20 secs. On my machine at work ( gotta love being a Network Tech ) all the settings are on low except Medium for Geometry and that takes about 10 secs. At home i have an 8 meg connection but at work it's 4. The best thing to do is find a setting that is best for you. Some people sacrifice looks for loading speed to get that first flag or vehicle.

Hope this helps.

Your machine is almost the same as my works machine except the video card ( Radeon 9200 ).

Well, it's odd, as the settings make no difference. I played around with them thinking that was the problem a while back - it made no difference.

Everythings on "low" and things such as dynamic shading etc are all off.

Other games I'm playing I've got all the settings really high and they're all very quick to load. I'm wondering if somehow theres a setting somewhere which says "Only allow limited connection speeds". As I've said, I have friends who have machines that are running at much lower specs and on lower connection speeds and it takes mere moments for them to get the data verified.

Just makes no sense. And I've only just reinstalled and re-patched it. I was hoping that'd sort it, but alas it hasn't helped a bit !

Do you defrag your drive very often?
Is it set for Sata, DMA, etc. Found by going to Device Manager, IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers, right click primary IDE Channel, Properties, Advanced Settings...

These two things can slow down a hdd by quite a lot and contribute to slow loading times.

For me it also takes ages when it's "verifying client data", maybe not ten minutes, but does anybody know what it is doing when it's "verifying..." ? This is the part which takes the most time but on some servers it's really quick...

Search is your friend.

But simply put, you need at least 1.5GB if you've got a fairly clean machine (not much background apps running).  I recommend getting 2GB total RAM.  I have 3GB and a Raptor HD, and I'm always among the first to get onto the game.

The Verifying Client Data bit is Punkbuster doing MD5 sum checks on the game files to make sure they have not been changed.

It's set for DMA.

As for defragging - every couple of weeks. I'm very fastidious with my PC maintenance.

I tried a few searchs - "Verify", "Verification" and a few others. Not a whole heap of any use was brought up to be honest, hence why I started a new topic - i don't like to start new topics, especially when theres 105 pages of historic threads !

Guess I'll be investing in some more RAM anyway (Well, another Gig.). I was running 1.5G, the .5 being a 512Mb stick I had before the Gig.

Bizarrely it kept giving me "physical memory dump" blue screens ... can't think why. : ) *Whistles*

I took it out in the end and just left the Gig in ....

I also had this issue at one time when I was only running with 1GB of RAM. I updated the RAM to 2GB and all that went away and now i'm like one of the first to spawn in. So go get yourself another 1GB of RAM and it should solve a lot of your issues with the game.

Cool - figured I'd have to. When I went from the 512M to the 1G I saw a huge increase in performance in all the games I play and the PC in general (Obviously!) except for the load times on BF2. The game, once it's up, is fine apart from the very occasional lag.

Looks like another trip to PC world for me ... and some tweaking with the tips I've just found ...

if you dont want to wait for the client data to load, play on servers without battle recorder (servers with the computer screen missing on the server list) this cuts out the verifying client data bit. i only play servers without battle recorder now because it cut my loading time significantly. load up you graphics and then the join game option appears straight after. another thing that reduced loading time was the upgrade from 1gb ram - 2gb, but that shouldnt really be that neccessary in your case.

Evil? I know an Evil... Are u evil from CS?

Anyway. this sounds like a firewall prob to me. although u do have a weak graphics card it shouldnt be causing anything like this unless its broke, maybe try updating graphics card drivers.

Other than that check the firewall on the router. set the dmz to ur computers ip so the firewall isnt blocking it then try again, you may wanna try disabling any local firewalls also. Update Punkbuster if u havent. Dont for get to check for driver updates for that crappy card....

GL

Edit: if the game plays fine in single player the more than likely its a firewall issue. Something isnt communicating to the server correctly or efficiently.

first off, what kind of RAm are you running, and yes. you need atleast 1.5 gigs of ram to have fast load times. Corsair Ram= 1337 Ram (made load times 1000000x faster.) also, make sure vid settings are on medium. close all other programs.... AOL is known to be slow as hell. Try to get DSL or Cable. more reliable without all the traffic. And other than more ram. thats about it.

I came from 512 to 1.5 gb. I still had problems with the Verification. I found out it was because my processor was bottlenecking me. I had 2.2 ghz pentium 4, about like yours. And so, before i boot up bf2, I ctrl alt delete and set BF2.exe on High priority in the windows task menu.

So far I've cut down the Verification from 2-3 mins to 50 seconds.

This shows you to set BF2 on high priority automatically without you having to manually change it

tip 4.

I have everything on medium, except lighting. Lighting is low and I've turned off all dynamic anythings.

Terrain draw distance is 100 %

I have 6600 gt Geforce

Peace out, hope this helps.

"verifying client data" is the keyword...

Hi people !

Well, thanks to this thread and severla others I've reduced my verification time somewhat - I'll be purchasing another gig of RAM next weekend so no doubt that'll soo have me rocking and rolling even quicker.

Just another thing I've now noticed though;

When I select a server to play on, it goes through loading up all the map etc, verifies the data, but as it gets to the point where I expect it to bring up the "Join Game" button it dumps me back on the server selection screen with a "You lost connection to the server" message.

I've checked my connection, which appears fine, so any ideas ?

As a scummy AOL user (Don't ask ...) I still have lovely AOL running in the background - I'm guessing this isn't going to help, but how else can I play online games without actually being online ? My other games are fine, but I'm guessing they must be less demanding than BF2/SF.

Anyone else had this problem ? I've done a search and found lots of things about pings etc but to be honest I wouldn't know where to start with sorting that stuff out ... : )

Get more RAM,I have 2 gigs now and it has significantly reduced my loading and verification time and all my hardware related laggyness.

Alright, with AOL you don't have to use their crappy program to connect.
Just create a new network connection manually. You'll need to choose an option with wording along the lines of "connect via broadband that requires a user name and password". Then use your aol email as the username and the corresponding password as the password. Instead of loading aol after you've finished, connect with the new settings you just made.
If you need help PM me and I'll guide you through it, it should be pretty simple though. Also it isn't against any terms of usage or anything so don't worry about that.

#1) Connect to linux (penguin) servers and watch "Verify" times goto less than 10 seconds.

#2) Random "lost connection"s? Alt-tab, ctrl-shit-esc (task manager), right click BF2.EXE, "Affinity", make sure only ONE processor is checked. (You have to do this *every* fucking time...)
