Hello Bf2s! I am looking to buy a digital subcompact (point and shoot) camera for the holidays.  I want to spend around $200 max and that's basically it.  Any suggestions?

Panasonic TZ-7. Great photos, plus shoots video in 720p.

Nikkor lens ... worth the extra size.

I think he wants something that can fit in his pocket...

Google for some recently made reviews and find what suits you best

I know that is why I said worth the extra size. You need some real glass and a reasonable sized sensor to get quality images. Anything less and I'll just use my camphone.

I know mate, but while camera phones have come a long way, they are not quite capable of pocket-cam quailty pics yet... at least from my experience

I'm going to jump in here and completely disagree with you. If you're going for something that bulky you may as well get a smaller DSLR like a D40/D3000. There are plenty of great point and shoot cameras out there, which you can easily fit in your pocket and take good photos. Maybe not DSLR quality, but if you need portability (is that a word?) the quality is more than good enough.

EDIT: And camera phones are not a viable alternative to a pocket-sized camera. In ideal lighting conditions you may end up with some decent shots, but they'd always be better on a P&S.

D40/D3000? You'd pay significantly more.  I realize point and shoots have come a long way .. I've even posted similar remarks. However, it's all relative. The fact is a bigger lens/sensor will gather more light and create better images.

The camera I posted is a going to give you much better images than your posted Panasonic TZ-7. My Droid X shoots 720p video .. but that doesn't necessarily mean that it will look good. The people who are getting hyped up with the specs like 720p are the same people who got caught up in megapixels.

Megapixels matter less when you're trying to cram them on to a small sensor. In fact they are a determent to quality when they do that.. it sells tho.

But yea, if size is the most important thing go for the slimmer one.

It's just hard for me as a photographer to advocate something of lesser quality for the same price.

Yeah possibly, without looking it up I'm never sure how US/UK pricing translates. Sometimes you guys seem to get amazingly good deals and sometimes they seem the same.

The TZ-7 was recommended to me by a bunch of pro/semi-pro photographers actually, it's pretty damn good. Video quality is fantastic as well, I'm aware that just about anything can be 720p, but the video quality is great, but obviously not like anything you'd get from a 5D or something. I'm sure that the camera you posted would take better photos, but - and obviously this is an assumption here as to what he wants out of it - for taking drunk photos in bars and snapshots on a beach I'd say it's not really needed. If you're putting effort into getting the right shot then that quality matters, but if you're not the the differences are going to be negligible. I'm only a recent convert to the uses of compact cameras, but I'm pretty impressive with my TZ-7 so far.

As the owner of a 6MP camera (D40) I'm certainly not caught up in the more = better hype

Heh, that's pretty much the definition of ideal lighting conditions though. I'm sure even my Blackberry could get an acceptable shot with that amount of equipment helping out. The iPhone camera is great don't get me wrong, but as soon as you get into low light conditions, at least from what I've seen on my friends iPhone 4, the quality drops dramatically compared to a compact camera.

Also, move the topic to Tech to avoid boring all the EE readers?

There was a remake that someone did because it caused so much controversy.. In the remake all they had was a bed sheet, a window, and a lamp.

But even a DIY photo studio is still going to be better lighting that you're going to find when out taking photos in the street. I hate to keep arguing about this, but it just doesn't represent real world usage that 99.9% of users are going to be doing.

Hey guys, thanks for the suggestions! I was hoping people would have listed some more cameras that cost less than $200, but that is ok! Anyway, I do want something that I can fit in my pocket, and as you guys were giving me suggestions/arguing, I was doing some research of my own.

Now, would $60 make that much of a difference in a camera, and would it be worth it?
Here's what I am talking about...

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00395YA86/ref … B00395YA86

EDIT: WTF another camera that, price wise, is inbetween the two above http://www.amazon.com/Panasonic-DMC-FH2 … amp;sr=8-1
And I am not strictly looking to buy just a panasonic, I just happen to be researching the brand right now.

Also, more suggestions would be nice! Gracias.

I know, still better than a camera phone.

Its worth thinking about whether you want a viewfinder, in full sunlight a screen can be useless.

I'm always dubious about very wide ranging zooms, there's usually a compromise in there somewhere, and with 14 megapixels its not as if you can't zoom in a bit afterwards. I'm not sure 200mm equiv max focal length is a lot of use in a compact, and with such a small lens you're not going to gather a lot of light. So I'd pick the 5x

OTOH You can't widen the shot afterwards so the one with the widest angle may be worth having, which happens to be the 8x.

Up to you to work out what kind of shooting you'll do.

Also, include in your budget a quality case.

Hello Again! I decided to lower my budget down to 100-150 since $200 would be a bit much.  So anyway, I am leaning towards that Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH3 (http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00395WIA8/ref … B00395WIA8), but if you guys want to suggest me any other cameras or just tell me why I shouldn't get it, please go for it!  Also, what are some important, discreet things I should be looking for in a camera?  Yes, I have been doing my research, but I figured i would ask Bf2s because some members know how to use a camera!
