Well going by Aussie dollars i can get two gtx460 sli or two 6850 CF for $438 AUD or a single gtx 480 for $399 AUD.
One GTX 460 or HD 6870 or wait for GTX 570 and HD 6970 launches in December. If you opted for first but still feel its not enough, then talk about grabbing another one.

I would seriously wait for the new cards, HD 6950/70 or the GTX 570 would be right in the price range.

e: You can always get the rest but leave out the graphics cards for now and see how it goes.
Only reason i was considering the 2nd build over the first build is so id have extra cash to spend on a better gfx since it would suit my needs better so i guess i can wait till December.

Thanks for the help everyone.

e:  Not to mention the 470 is, well, rubbish.
Lower end CF isn't really great option, you can have a look at the pic you linked, even HD 6870 has 3 times higher minimum fps, not to mention the other problems with multi-gpu setups.

I am pretty sure almost all P55 boards support SLi too, will check that board or equivalent with SLi support.

e: ASUS P7P55D PRO or similar should be around same price level as that Gigabyte but support both SLi and CF.

But really think what you are getting, CF/SLi are always more problematic than fast single GPU.
So you're saying 6850 is low end? It's in the same performance and price bracket as a GTX 460, and that's being hailed for it's SLi performance.

It is lower end card, replacement for HD 5770. SLi/CF with cards that level is rather pointless when there are nearly 50% faster single GPU cards.

Why go for 50% improvement on a single card when you could have up to 95% improvement from two cards?

You will never see that high scaling figures, usually 30-70% at 1920x1080 res and above. Sometimes scaling is 0% because there is no driver support. You get shitload of problems too which you don't get with single GPU. Minimum fps sucks balls too with multi-GPU setups.

=> it is pointless unless you get 2 highend cards

The fuck are you on? In every benchmarks for any SLi/CF cards I haven't seen a setup get anything less than 70%.

Show me two mid-range cards that scale that poorly then we'll talk about me staying quiet, cause what you've said there is there's no point in getting SLI/CF unless it's high end.. then you showed me that high-end SLI/CF is also useless.. completely invalidating your point.

HD 6870

highend CF/SLi is not totally useless, that is only way of getting more performance than best single GPU card for 2560x1600 res.

It is, it is HD 5830 replacement. Not HD 5870 replacement, that will be HD 6970. This is like me talking to a rock if you even don't know that 200€ card is mid range.

I guess it's matter of opinion.. I'd say 5770 is mid-range, I'd not pay €200 for a midrange card.. that's high for me. Above that'd be enthusiast.

my 6870 is a mid-range card, has always been advertised as such and performs as such

£300+ is the minimum cost high-end, and pretty much always has been, tbh. even my evga 8800GTX's cost that in 2007
