Need speakers for my PC

My HD595s are nice, but I need some decent sound that doesnt have to sit on my head all day. I can't get a surround setup going here as I've got nowhere to put the back speakers, so 2.1s are probably preferred. I don't know a thing about speakers so my budget of 2-300 euros isn't set in stone either. I don't care about how they perform for games or movies, just music.

Also, my current sound card is an audigy 4, is there any reason to upgrade it? find it hard to believe that such an old card is still any good.

Non-audiophile opinion:

I have Creative Soundworks 250D 2.1. I'm in the same position, I use my headphones - HD555s - if I want good quality and the speakers when I'm just chilling. They sound fine to me, the 'average' user, pretty loud, plenty of bass if you want it and pretty compact too.

Most mid-range or low-end speakers you get probably won't outperform the 'sound' of good headphones. If you don't care about surround, just get any old Logitech 2.1.

I'd go with the M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 for higher quality, which is about $150USD from Best Buy.

These come fairly highly recommended, if you don't mind stashing a sub under your desk. Older product with plenty of good durability marks.

if you aren't interested in buying satellite studio speakers... don't. don't get the bottom-end budget shitty m-audio ones.

a creative/standard 2.1 set-up will do a university room just fine.

if you actually want studio-quality satellite speakers, then get some KRK's

I've actually been pretty happy with some of my m-audio stuff. Then again, I've gotten them all at ludicrous sales at Guitar Center, so didn't feel cheated.

a creative/standard 2.1 set-up will do a university room just fine.

And again, ^this if you want to save a few bucks.

note that this (KRKs) is a long road to spending all your hard earned money

i bought a pair of KRK RP5G2s for 300, which were beautiful and you can stop there if you get a ground loop isolator for your RCA cables and you have a decent enough audio card

the accompanying sub is 400, and the external audio card i'm using is 200, though, so $1000 in total including cabling.

I didn't plan on spending a grand on my audio setup but i'm kinda glad i did, and it was gradual enough

you really really don't need the sub.

i'd get the biggest-size krk's in a pair before even considering a sub. THEN maybe i'd consider the sub. there's no way you're driving that thing in a college dorm room. it's pointless power and oodles more low-end than you need. as for the audio-card... well, anyone with an interest in a home-studio or home hi-fi set-up would have a hi-fi or sound card for processing the audio, anyway. making the conversion from a gaming computer to an audio set-up... okay, you'll maybe need a basic external DAC/soundcard.

the output is set farrrrr below my monitors (and I live in an apartment, not quite so eentsy), and it picks up some of the low end stuff that the monitors didn't

like i said, the pair of monitors should be enough if you have a card

I'd go with one of the M-Audios, KRKs or Klipsch ProMedia 2.1s. The M-Audios are phenomenal for computer speakers, the KRKs are incredible studio speakers and I've never heard a bad review from somebody with the Klipschs (I have the 5.1s and love them).

I'm not finding anything by krk on sale in the netherlands. For Klipsch I've got the RB-81 and the RF-62. Are either of these a good choice?

I have a set of HR824 Mackie Studio monitors. Excellent speakers with a shit load of bass so no 2.1 needed.

If u spend a few extra quid, go for studio monitors. They are what sound enginneers use to mix tracks and they provide the best sound for their size. They work well for games and very well for music and video playback.

KRK's also good, but more expensive. It all depends on how much you care about sound quality versus just sound quantity. While M-Audio aren't quite studio-grade, they're plenty enough for anyone not a diehard audiophile.

Winston's recco of Klipsch is also quite good, but I don't know how practical they are as a desktop application (what with amp and all)...unless they have powered ones...I should get in the know again.

No they are not powered. they need an amp.
