Unfortunately Ty, that's the way the media works. The people who actually do a good, truthful and well rounded report on a story get drowned out by Today/Tonight and A Current Affair-esque sensationalist, over the top crap. I was in the same boat when I heard about the explosion, I immediately wondered why they had referred to the miners as "trapped" when they hadn't heard a thing about them.Ty wrote:
If you remember back I think my last post in this thread was about 29 Miners trapped in New Zealand after an explosion at the Pike River mine.
Unfortunately a second explosion occurred today and it is the opinion of those on the ground that there is now no chance that any of the 29 survived it. Not that, in my opinion, they had much chance of survival in the first place. It's really put the nation on a low.
You know who I blame? The fucking media. Since the start they wanted to turn it into Chilean Mine story, always referring to the miners as 'trapped' and gearing up for a big heartwarming finish where they'd all be pulled from the mine smiling. Immediately I saw it as tempting fate and my gut told me that it would end in a really depressing way. So yay I'm clairvoyant - or a realist, whatever. Still, it makes me sick that the media will play with people's emotions in order to better sell a story.

ofc i meant the majority. Think what you will, but News organizations classify success by viewers, readers, and listeners. They provide us (the majority) with what we want. .. or they fail.eskimo_sammyjoe wrote:
I don't know about "we", but the majority of the population do. I like to think that most of us here are a little bit better than that.

Right now I couldn't even see a jumbo jet fly one block away. And in five minutes, I think I won't be able to see my car either, and it's parked outside the office window.
Goddamn snow. Goddamn wind. Goddamn wind blowing snow in my face and forming drifts everywhere. On the roads, outside front doors, on my balcony.
Goddamn.

A friend of my Mum refuses to watch SBS or ABC because she says the news is too depressing, so she'd rather watch the news with the skateboarding dog or similar at the end to lighten the mood. I didn't even bother trying to argue the point.Little BaBy JESUS wrote:
Glad there are still news stations like ABC and SBS, its a shame that they probably only get around 5% of the audience

My friends think the fact that I listen to ABC 702AM radio while I drive is weird. If they want to remain ignorant to the goings on in the world then that's fine by me...Little BaBy JESUS wrote:
