DVI, HDMI, sound questions

here's the deal. i have my computer (with a 4870) hooked up to my TV. the video card has two DVI ports. i know that most DVI does not transmit audio, but i thought that most ATi cards do. i have hooked up the TV to the computer via a male-male HDMI cable and a DVI-->HDMI adapter. the video comes through fine, and the TV acts as my second monitor. however, audio comes out through my computer's speakers. what gives?

nvm got it. i can only play sound through the tv or through my speakers though. how can i play sound through both at once?

DVI does not carry sound, one of the reasons HDMi was invented was just this- to carry video and audio through one cable. You need to use HDMI cable only, without any adapters.

You are correct that DVI doesn't carry sound but many GPU's do send sound through the DVI plug (similar to the way they send an analog signal) through unused pins to allow a DVI to HDMI cable to be used for sound and video

Go to the little speaker in the bottom right of your taskbar. Right click, go to playback devices. Set the ATI HDMI or ATI SPDIF to defult.

If it can, your pc will now send the audio down the hdmi.

I have USB headphones for gaming with its own sound device. I have a soundcard to run my PC speakers and I have a HDMI running to my TV.
I can switch between all three sound playback devices depending on what I am doing.

TV speakers, especially in-built speakers, are terrible.

He can get the sound through the HDMI, what he wants is the sound to go to both his PC speakers and through the HDMI at the same time, which I'm not sure is possible.

because the audio signal can come out of the tv into the audio system, "so what you see is what you hear"

my video card had an internal spdif connector which i connected my sound card to, this enabled the sound aspect in the hdmi connection
