Merit scholarships are given out like candy over here in the U.S. This debate isn't about merit scholarships.

What do you expect? You can afford a snazzy house but can't afford college?
Nah, I got a modest primary residence.  And can easily afford tuition to any prep-school or university.   Thing is that, I can afford at least 4x the house I have now.  My neighbor though, has at least 4 wage earners in their house.  They got a mortgage readjustment about 3 years ago that removed about a third of their principal.  Yeah, I'm pissed.

I remember reading that short story back in 8th grade. I remember the Handicapper in chief kills all the dancers in the end.

So, work your ass off and sacrifice for the next two generations.  That's how the Asians do it.  That Asian who used to work as a bus boy or maid has grand children who are doctors and lawyers.

That's more like it. Fuck those other guys, you snooze you lose. The person with the most handicaps is the winner! The poor people wouldn't have any use for the money that will go towards a motorboat/lake house/European vacation anyway.

Funny, my grandparents did the same thing for their kids and grandkids. It's not unique to Asians, it's called having your priorities in line. Life isn't me me me me me me and then leaving the leftovers for your accidental children.

So then change that system. As Macbeth said, our education might be expensive in the US as a whole, but merit based scholarships are handed out like water.

Like I said before, if you are poor and have awsm grades, in the U.S., you'll get scholarships thrown at you.

Here you just get the privilege of actually enrolling in a course you might want to do at the university of your choice.

It doesn't matter what uni you go to or what course you take it costs the same.

Seems that this is the way its going to be. The protests were completely pointless in the first place, they were never going to achieve anything and anyone believing otherwise is an idiot.
The thing that's worst about this is how it's going to affect the average student: those who try hard and do well at exams, with average earning parents. At the moment it costs around £7000 a year for a university to educate one student, of which the student pays £3200 and the rest is from university research and government funding.
With the cuts to the universities this cost is going to go up, and the student is going to be expected to pay more.
£9000 a year isn't going to be for exceptional universities, it's going to be the norm. This combined with accommodation and living fees is going to equal a lot of debt, for example, the accommodation for the university I want to go to is £6500 a year, stick travel (subsidiaries are also being cut) and other expenses on top of that and it adds up to a hell of a lot.

The thing about scholarships wont work. With the funding cuts, a lot of universities will have to cut scholarships.

Uhhh it has nothing to do with class? I don't think I need to explain to you of all people the possible multiple usages of classy. And come on dude, do you not have any arguments to rant at people, peppered with a few insults for good measure? I'm rather disappointed if your argument has come down to criticising the choice of word I used to describe someone desecrating a war memorial.

EDIT: But if it helps us get past this I'll retract that comment and substitute it with 'cunt'.

Can't afford the fees?  Blame your parents for not providing enough, or get a fuck'in job to pay for it.

Visited one of the prep schools I'm considering for my son.  Paltry merit scholarships, and even then, significant sacrifices to maintain them.  But then, tons of needs scholarship.  Fuck that!!!
what does a shitty prep school have to do with anything? and isn't it ironic that you complain about costs straight after encouraging the parents to cough up? oooookay. i think the students are angry that the good principle of our education-accessibility is being sacrificed as part of austere financial measures that have NOTHING to do with the student population. why are we paying for the older generation's foolish mistakes and avarice?
Which is why California's tier system works.  Community college (trade), CSU (State University), UC (University - can't really say how to differentiate it from a CSU other than cost though.  ).  Albeit these days, there are some relatively excellent CSU's and so so UC's.

Want to do photography.  Go Community college that even a minimum wager can afford.  Hell, I know of at least one CC that has a reputation for an excellent photography program.

Edit: ok, it's been years, but I don't recall CSU offering doctorates.

What with the huge amount of nabs getting useless degrees, you need one to work in retail these days.
Charging huge amounts so only the rich can get degrees isn't the solution to this either.
