No, not really. Why should I care about the few people you let in. I have over a quarter of our population to worry about.

The point i'm trying to make is that it's a large increase, one that will put off average/poorer students. Assuming you've got no money going into this you're loaning 9k for tuition fees plus another 6 or 7 for accommodation etc.
45k debt for the rest of your life to pay off seems like quite a large chunk to me.

@galt: i suppose 15k is just spare change to you?
It just sounds like you're incapable of thinking in the long term. Accommodation costs is around 3k, and often a lot less, so don't get too carried away.

23.5K average graduate income?  Then yeah, 30K over 20 years is chump change.  If they are blowing off their money on parties, booze, expensive material things first, well, tough shit.

Our private schools have merit based scholarships as well.

No I know, but you said you paid 450/month and that was a lot more than most? That's 5,400 a year for somewhere that by the sound of it is way above student living. Presumably it's doable for 3500/4000. I've no idea where he's going, I guess if it's London you will spend a lot more, but other cities (eg Manchester) rent money goes a long way.

We have a shitload of scholarships.  Top universities seek out top academics almost as much as top athletes.

Which brings us back to a prior notion on this thread.  We have a significant foundation/endowment system at our Uni's.   Over tax the wealthy enough, and they won't give as much, which in the long run, hurts the poor more than the rich.

University of Sydney Outstanding Achievement Scholarships

For: Local students with an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank) of 99.95.
Value: $10,000 p.a.
Duration: Length of degree.
How to apply: You do not need to apply for these scholarships, although you must have a preference for The University of Sydney on your UAC application. You will be contacted when the ATARs are released if you meet the eligibility criteria.

Which by my rough estimations means you have to be in the top 100 students in the country to qualify.

-_- Uni's aren't the only ones giving awards. Plenty of private corporations give out awards as well as political organizations. There are also entire charities set up to help get poor kids who are smart through college.

You can't judge the entire U.S. system based off your own school.

And that's the only major scholarship around?  We've got scholarships from just about everything.  You're a natural blonde?  Here's some money.  Like to fish, here's some money.  Of course they don't compare to the full scholarships, but they can add up.  I've got some from Nissan and Bank of America.  My current job awards some if you pursue an engineering degree.

You have to be fan-fucking-tastic around here to even receive the most paltry of scholarships.

I had a high school teach who went to a 4 year private o a scholarship he got for having good grades and being Italian.

A girl from my elementary school grad class parents gives out a scholarship every year in memorial to their son who died in the 6th grade.

Fair? If they have an A average they get a scholarship do they not?
Not always. Anyway, my ex has a scholarship because she is a grade A student from a broken home. It covers her study expenses for the duration of her course (books, travel etc). She still has to pay tuition fees back once she completes her degree.

It's the only one from that university which is merit based. Other universities will have similar ones. There are a few given out by corporations, but they also will have similar standards to qualify.

Then there's some For: Students with a good ATAR or an excellent AAM who have been disadvantaged financially or medically or are from a rural or remote background.

But in general at least 95% if not 98-99% of students will not get any form of scholarship.

If I had a scholarship foundation, I wouldn't give one to a 95% percentile either.  100 students per Uni seems reasonable.
