My illustrator/painter friend is looking for a laptop so she can work on the go. Any help would be grateful! She's even filled out a Q/A. thank you

max around $2000
2) What size notebook would you prefer?
15" to 17"+
3) USA
4) Are there any brands that you prefer or any you really don't like?
not a big fan of Dell
5) Would you consider laptops that are refurbished/redistributed?
no

using corel painter, adobe photoshop, web browsing, movies, music, possibly lightroom in the future.
7) Will you be taking the notebook with you to different places, leaving it on your desk or both?
rarely to travel, otherwise at home
8) Will you be playing games on your notebook? If so, please state which games or types of games?
probably not
9) How many hours of battery life do you need?
this isn't a huge issue for me at least 3 hrs?
10) Would you prefer to see the notebooks you're considering before purchasing it or buying a notebook on-line without seeing it is OK? online is ok

11) What OS do you prefer?
windows 7 or mac os
Screen Specifics

12) From the choices below, what screen resolution(s) would you prefer?
I think this is what I need:

Notebook Components

17) How much hard drive space do you need; 80GB to 640GB? Do you want a SSD drive? I believe i need at least 500GB to run Painter, the ssd drive sounds sweet if i can afford it sure...I added in specs below for painter/photoshop. using those programs sometimes the files get very big

the problem with my pc now is that i like to run photoshop and painter simultaneously and it cannot handle tha presha! Also I tend to fill it up with photos, music etc..

18) Do you need an optical drive? If yes, a CDRW/DVD-ROM, DVD Burner or Blu-Ray drive?
yes i think i need the dvd for photoshop....

I guess I am average with computers? whatever that means haha...I've been eyeing the macs but worry about transfering data from mac to current pc and back. I've had issues in the past with that.

500gb to run painter, lol, she probably meant 500mb

Sounds like she wants a big powerful thing with extra RAM and a decent processor. I have no idea about laptops since you can't really just make your own out of this and that.

HP, off the top of my head. They've always been good to me.

e: quick search:
HP ENVY 17-1181NR NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 17.3" 6GB Memory 750GB HDD 5200rpm BD Combo ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850

US$1300

e2: 5200, meh. could always swap it out for a faster drive if you really need

Mobile 5850s are unbelievably underpowered.

It's a high res at $1300 with a $2000 ceiling, and what newegg gave me for a 1080 HP search. Only slightly over what I paid for my Sony.

Sue me.

e: I don't know if it's gloss or matte.

Tbh, I don't really understand why she doesn't like Dell. They make good laptops and give decent price/performance ratio. I'd look at one of their latest model business laptops. I'm sure you could get something good there.

Also if she's a serious photoshopper, she should consider opening the thing only to turn it on, and using an external monitor.

Just go for this. Budget allows it:

" about the not liking dells, i guess my previous experience with dell pc was bad...didnt like the fact that I couldnt add stuff to it...but that was at least 6 years ago
and with a laptop you cant add anything anyway"

Yeek, doesn't seem like much of an improvement over the HP.

As a final note, $1300 or less for a laptop leaves room for a Wacom Intuos tablet and a real monitor.

e:
$1300 HP + $350 8.8"x5.5" Intuos4 + $300 27" ASUS LCD ~ $2000

Toshiba have had less problems than HP in my experience.

Really? There are three HP's floating around the house right now without any problems at all. The Toshiba, on the other hand, is in the scrap heap (but it's old).

I think HP's tend to have shittonnes of problems if you buy the cheapest model on the shelf. My mom bought one for $550 a couple years ago, and it turned out to have a MAJOR overheating issue. (Just sitting on idle, propped up on some books it would go into heat fail-safe after 30 minutes). HP Knew about this issue and did nothing to compensate for or fix the problem.

Once you get into either their business lines or the higher-costing models, they're alright.

Right, then. Never had an HP smaller than 17", but can tell you that they run cooler than my 18" Vaio (if that thing hadn't been sooooo cheap I would've went with another mfg). If you're still worried, plop it on top of a cooler for relief like I do for both laptops and PS3's.
