Sony Vegas rendering to .wmv

I'm trying to render a video to .wmv using Sony Vegas Platinum 9.0 on Windows 7 x64 but I get this message:

"There is no template available for this format. The selected media may not support it. Try again?"

Does this mean it can't find the codec? Some people have said re-installing or updating WMP has fixed it, but can I even do that on Windows 7?

I suppose you could try exporting it to .avi, then opening up Windows Movie Maker, drop in the movie, then export that, which will automatically be in .wmv.

What are your options in the filetype? Why WMV?

WMV is a container, not a codec btw

It needs to be wmv because every PC should be able to play that out of the box.

I know wmv isn't a codec but windows uses a codec to play the file right? and i'm guessing it uses it to render?

Windows Media Video. There's a hint in there

Just use .avi or better .mkv or .mp4

Why does it give audio container options for a video

And yeah, just use avi or mkv. WMP can open any avi natively and I'm pretty sure most mkv natively

It needs to be wmv, it's being implemented in a program and the developers only want to use wmv

I've tried doing it as avi then using converters but they all seem to fuck it up in some way.
