This blog is amazing! You'll learn a lot.

I love the article about Mt. Everest. I hope you enjoy reading these articles as much as I did.

Someone Stephen Fry, on QI, recently told me said that they're planning a mission to clean up Everest. That is, removing all the dead bodies.

First article I saw was one on the Box Jellyfish and other spineles nasteis. Box Jellyfish is the most evil thing in existence. Proof that if there is a God he hates us all very very much.

I remember that Everest David Sharp story. NZ amputee climber Mark Inglis was one of the 40 that day. There were calls that the added attention of getting a man with prosthetic legs to the top meant that Sharp was abandoned rather than Inglis' climb. That's the problem with Everest nowadays, people pay thousands to get to the top and they won't let anything get in the way of their achievement. Sharp wasn't the first to be "abandoned" and he wont be the last. What's worse is when people can't make the summit and press on regardless, (summit fever,) like in 1996 when Beck Weathers was left with his new face, (pictures in the blog entry.)

Good blog, very interesting.

The blog links to a 5-part youtube vid of it, if you can ignore all the comments about "omg people are so evil on Everest."

well tbh I never really thought about it.

But one would assume someone would take the bodies down and bury them.

Climbers are a funny lot, they're in it for the ego boost going up and down a hill apparently gives them, not for each other.

From what I've heard a group of Sherpas are planning on going up and bringing a load of bodies down from the dead zone.

I dunno. Sure there are very few stories of climbers acting the hero and risking themselves for a fallen comrade but remember on a mountain side it does become a question of "can I really help them or will I just be stupidly causing my own death?" Getting a stricken comrade off a mountainside, especially one like Everest or K2, is no easy task. Those among you who've read/seen "Touching the Void" about Joe Simpson and Simon Yates' climb in the Andes will know that Yates, even helping the stricken Simpson as much as he could, was eventually faced with the question of where either they both die or Simpson dies. There was nothing he could do and he made the decision to save himself, one that any of us would make if we weren't loony. The fact that Simpson survived regardless is just a sign that that motherfucker's a Terminator.

climbing is a sport that champions individualism - the triumph of man over nature

no shit that somebody that has just yanked their ass into one oft he most extreme environments on earth isn't going to be all altruistic for somebody else that is in a tough predicament. just seeing your own self through the experience is going to be one of the most testing, life-threatening experiences of your life... why would you be overly-concerned with anyone else? i don't think it indicates anything other than the selfishness we all ultimately have -- call it self-preservation -- at the core. boohoo. if i was on the last stretch of a climb up the greatest physical triumph of my life, i doubt i'd consider jacking it in and helping some other guy.

You would be able to live knowing you could have saved that person's life but you let a human being, who had a life and family, die because you want to climb a giant rock?
