The Stuxnet virus is a new breed of computer viruses that can infect PLC systems. PLC systems are the computer systems that control automation in general, mostly industrial machinery but not just that. By creating a virus that infects PLC, viruses can now disrupt or reprogram anything from factory robotic arms to submarine diving planes.
Sounds a little far fetched? Their biggest victim so far has been the Iranian Nuclear Facilities.. Iran has confirmed a couple of weeks ago that their centrifuges were damaged by the virus. Its can't be a coincidence that the Iranian program was attacked, because these kind of virus have to be specifically targeted. They aren't like your regular windows virus that will attack any windows machine.
To make a virus like this demands allot of knowledge of industrial processes, PLC programming and specific information on your target’s industry. Not the kind of things your regular hacker/virus programmer knows. This is most likely government funded.
Tailor your virus correctly and you can attack anything that uses PLC, from baby formula mixers to missile silo doors. Next step, Skynet. Then terminators. I hope John Connor is well hidden…
