Not having a tripod made it very difficult. .. and now, my camera is pretty dated. It shows at night with noise.. but here

Dang that's cool! Why does the moon have a red shadow though?

The red light you see on the Moon comes from all the sunrises and sunsets that are occurring around Earth at the time. Our atmosphere scatters and refracts (bends) the sunlight that grazes the rim of our globe, sending some of it into Earth’s shadow.

The picture don't do it any justice. You arent seeing the backdrop of all the stars.

It is still going on

It's also red because ozone (O3) stops the shorter electromagnetic waves, and the further light has to travel through the atmosphere it absorbs the violets and blues.

That is true. There was talk of it possibly being turquoise as well. I guess a few recent ones have been.

Next total eclipse of the heart is June 15th, 2011. Won't be visible in the US though. Could very well be that the next total lunar eclipse that can be seen in the US is in 2014.

Solar eclipses are way cooler, though. A partial one will be on Jan 4th here in Northern Yuropstan.

We get lunar eclipses pretty frequently. You'll have to look up when you'll be able to see the next one.

There were so many people on facebook making up hype about this being a one in 600 year event. Well, yea I guess that is true because it falls on the Winter Solstice, but so what? I mean, it has no bearing on what will happen. So the days in the northern hemisphere are also getting longer now. Big deal. They are just repeating headlines.

Went outside to get a look.

Just looked like a half moon.

Because the bright side of the moon is so bright by contrast the color shift is not very noticeable until it fades considerably. I had to tell my daughter to be patient for that reason.

Damn it!
I could have seen a partial eclipse before moonset. I had completely clear sky. I had a reflecting telescope with moon filter ready. But I played computer games all night, only to fall asleep 1.5 hours short.

Then 3 hours later getting up for work.
