Plenty of movie adaptations. It's like they make at least one every year.Jenspm wrote:

they represent the second worst phase in the history of the entire novel form, in my opinion
500 pages of silly bullshit for bored housewives
the only female writers with any power, intensity and creative merit from that era are the brontes

but you have to admit Jane Eyre and Wuthering Heights were fucking dull reads. I was hardly sitting on the edge of my seat waiting for Heathcliff to brood over Cathy some more.
Year 12 English we had to read Pride And Prejudice and write about it in our final exam.AussieReaper wrote:

One moron decided to read the book illustrated above instead.
he failed.
everything i write is a ramble and should not be taken seriously.... seriously. ♥
they're all long and over-indulgent. women writers in that era had a very big and very long axe to grind on the 'establishment'.
but at least wuthering heights has something more... something transcendent... something gothic and dark... something romantic as well as realist
austen novels are literally filler-material where nothing happens, nothing is written with style, nothing new develops, and the plot is always resolved
as i said, boring writing for horny/loveless housewives to fantasize over fictional marriages and familial affairs. no thanks.

the supermarket novels of their day?
they certainly were the industry-leaders... a higher quality of writing, though.
supermarket novels nowdays have become so so basic and so so diluted because of the long-term effect of the market-force
back then writing was still a pretty educated pursuit, people were well-read and well-learned
supermarket novels nowadays are kinda like action movies... they're a product of instant-gratification, zero-thought culture

i'm always suspicious of novels I see advertised on the Metro
i think austen, content-wise is pretty shit... she just didn't push anything new, other than the feminist-social agenda of her day
but i would never put her on anywhere near the same level as supermarket fiction. her books are canonical and classic for a reason.
the only books that are worse than domestic-fiction, imo, are 18th century epistolary and moralistic novels. real early days stuff
now that is some dry shit.

Would watch just for a change, but I fear all the other Jane Austen/pop-culture crossover books would get their shot on the big screen as well.
